[FUD] Bulldozer to come close to i7 - Page 4

It's actually a huge achievement for AMD to come up with a chip that can match an i7

Core for core, the performance of a Phenom II is slower than an i7. Factor in cost and multi-threaded apps, there really is not much of a difference in applications that anyone uses on a normal basis. AMD's 6 core yields at least 20 GFLOPS more performance than i7 counter-parts, and although this does not reflect real world performance, AMD's 6 core is a much better number cruncher than an i7.

But this is a rumour. Should be thrown into off-topic.

AMD is awesome and all, and they can tout amazing price/performance for their chips.

... but do some of you guys actually expect BD chips to surpass, let alone catch up with, high-end Intel chips?

It's totally reasonable that AMD could catch up again at some point (however unlikely), but it will take a few generations of closing the gap. They're not going to come out with one magical socket that leap frogs the likes of the 980x/2600k-ish chips in one swift motion.

I'm expecting the AMD guys to possibly catch i7 Nehalem, as Thubanx6 only competes with Core2Quad...but to me it seems that Bulldozer gets smoked by Ivy Bridge. I doubt they;ll leapfrog Nehalem and compete with Sandy in either performance...although maybe in power consumption, from something JF-AMD posted a few days ago.

So, what they're saying is Bulldozer is still slower core-wise than the i7 Architecture. That is a huuuuge disappointment in my eyes. I'm rooting for AMD, and I do hope that this rumor is proven false, and they can compete on a core to core basis with Intel.

The way it's looking, AMD is going to lose some serious money if they are going to compete with Sandy/Ivy Bridge. It's a good thing they have the OEM market to sustain them.

Does anyone else notice a recurring theme here with AMD? AMD vs Intel seems to me to be the same as AMD vs Nvidia. To combat their lackluster CPU & GPU's, they just "throw more cores at it!" -- I'm of course speaking about how they throw 2 slower GPU's on a PCB to compete with Single GPU solutions.

Something drastic needs to happen at AMD. I'm rooting for them, but unless Bulldozer does some serious damage (other than Cinebench), I'm not going to switch from i7. frown.gif

I think Fudzilla just took the news that the CEO quit and used that as "facts" about the performance of Bulldozer...

arbalest: AMD graphics design is small die and dual die for high end. Thats their strategy since the 3870 days.

If only that price gap was still true. Maybe in comparison to x58 and higher end Sandy Bridge CPUs but Lynnfield CPUs are as cheap as some AMD systems now.

If I got some old pram wheels and nailed them to the side of a box and sat on it and went down hill, I suppose it would come close to the performance of a Porche.
