[FUD] Bulldozer to come close to i7 - Page 5

Congrats to AMD for coming out with a chip that will "come close" to a chip that will be over a year old by the time it's released.

That'll get some of that market share back for sure...

Man, if AMD can't compete and make Intel sweat then the computer enthusiast hobby/industry is over. Intel is going to be an ultra monopoly and we are going to be paying $500 for a future i3 equiv =(

how will it be a year old when its released they are talking about the "new i7" which essentially the sandy bridge cpus that have come out. why would they say new i7 if they were talking about their first gen i7?

As much as everyone doesn't want it to be, this is probably true. AMD has been competing with Intel's LAST generation since core2duo stomped them in 2006. Now in 2011 the story continues and it will probably never change. I really thought Bulldozer was going to be competing with the best chips available for the performance crown when they announced that they would renew their FX naming.

FX shouldn't stand for "well we tried but we can't keep up in performance so we are going to play the price card..... again"

Or this is just a BS rumor and we will finally have much closer competition between Intel and AMD CPU's similar to Nvidia and ATI/AMD GPU's. I doubt it though.

Quoted from the Article, with Emphasis in BOLD.

However, initial test scores that slipped to a hands of industry source are suggesting that Bulldozer should come really close to new Core i7 six-core CPUs.
That would seem to me they're talking about Westmere, not Sandy Bridge.

Even though that is a feat all it's own, unless they can match Sandy Bridge core to core, I won't be switching. Sadly, I have no use for Cinebench.

Hi All,

I think that the clock for clock speed thinking is what AMD is getting away from with BD. The BD is not conventional in the data handling area. The only way to see where it ends up is just that, wait and see where it benchmarks at. The whole idea is that it processes differently. How that relates we won't know until it is put to the test.
I'll reserve judgement one way or the other until I see where the numbers fall on production chips.

If they can best i7-980X at a $200 pricepoint that would still be a win.

It is Fud, I wouldn't trust this news for one nano-second. Even if it turns out true, it says it comes close to the "new i7's" which would mean the 2500/2600 or maybe they meant the 980x since it says new 6 core(either way it is a giant leap in performance for AMD). Also, it doesn't say if this is on a per core basis or overall and which AMD chip it even is, the 4, 6 or 8 core? If BD is very close to SB on a core to core basis, it would be a pretty nice leap for AMD and their higher core count BD chips will most likely beat most SB parts and probably at a lower price. If their 6 core BD chip pars up with the 980x for $300 or less, it is a winner in my book. Again though, I wouldn't trust FUD with any news like this.

Not really. It's still a loss. Touting and releasing a "New Architecture" that can only compete with Intel's Highest End CPU of the LAST Generation is hardly a win.

Do you really think it will be $200? Come on! I can see $300, but like I've been saying, unless it's fast core-wise as the Intel Architecture, there's no point. Games will play the same regardless of 4,6, or 8 cores, and Cinebench seems to be the last remaining benchmark in which AMD only wins by pure core count, and not by much.

I'm all for AMD, but they're lackluster and have been for quite some time. They need to push the performance envelope. Beat Intel at it's own game!
