5 Second Screen Black-Outs While Playing Games?

Thread Starter
I play CS:S a lot lately, and at night my room gets really hot because the Air Conditioning is off and the door is closed.

At around 1:00AM whilst I'm playing CS:S, some fans in my case will get a lot louder and my screen will turn black, when the picture returns it will say that I am plugged into DVI - this usually appears when I start up the computer, or when I change from HDMI (console) to DVI with the PC turned on. Nothing is plugged into HDMI, and I'm thinking this is either a driver issue or overheating.

I checked HWMonitor and I'm on around 60C with my 460, whilst my 640 is only at around 45. I notice that as the screen is turning blank, there is a sound and video crash, with a small amount of screen tear.

I know the Fermis can run hot, but 60C is not hot, I've seen this go up to 78 before on a really hot day.

The only option that is available for me is to use MSI Afterburner to up the fan speed. I turn it on to around 85 - 90 % when I get to around 60C.

play less CS:S

lol jokes aside, try upping fan speed, and check your connections. see if anything is mis aligned, also id see how your cooling through your case is, because it can cause a sort of "backwash" of hot air, a bit like a x360 gets rrod...

Does the card 60C while your playing or when you're just browsing, etc.? I would say that your best bet is overheating.

Well I just checked now, I'll show you how my card is running after just some browsing:

850 / 1700 / 1950
46% Fan Speed
34 Degrees C

Not been past 35C since I played CSS.

Huh, temps should be perfect then. If they don't get up past 60C when you're playing (78 isn't catastrophic either) then that doesn't make sense. Just in case, make sure there is no dust or anything in the fan on or near your card. Make sure the ambient temps in your PC aren't too hot either.

To sort of steer away from temp issues, make sure your drivers are updated. I would double check your OC stability. Try dropping to stock clocks and see if you're having the same problem.

I have only ever had NVidia cards for a very long time, and i'm running FW 260.99.

Checked for drivers yesterday, I check almost weekly.

No dust inside, it's a new build and I've taken the side off a lot lately to clear CMOS, never noticed any dust then.

Only other temperatures are:

Mainboard: 30C
TMPIN2: 128C

Update your drivers, or if you have the latest driver for your card go back to an earlier version. I had this problem where my graphics driver kept resetting, it did it in java for some reason.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like overheating at all.

260.99 was the first and only drivers I've used for my 460, no problems at all. That's not to say you're not having some sort of driver conflict.

Are you sure your GPU overclock is stable?
