Using this heap o' junk for a home server?

Right, I have at my disposal:
ECS 755-A2 motherboard (has 2 SATA-150 ports, think it supports RAID)
AMD Sempron w/ stock cooler (Socket 754, 1.6GHz, not sure if it supports 64-bit)
768MB RAM
30GB WD HDD (for the OS)
WinFast GeForce 3 64MB
300W Q-TEC PSU (it was all I had spare)
Casecom case
DVD-RW

My intention is to get a 1TB SATA-300 drive (I believe some have jumper settings to force it to SATA-150), plonk it in, and either put Windows Server 2008 (get it through Dreamspark), or FreeNAS or any other Linux distro on it. This would be used as a network drive, for storing music, documents, photos and backups of important files. I would be connecting it between PCs running various Microsoft OS's from XP to 7, and the occasional Linux box. Due to space constraints, it would not be connected directly to our router via Ethernet, it would probably be connected via wi-fi (we only have a 802.11g network). It would be upstairs, next to my sigrig, and would be accessed by Remote Desktop Connection, and eventually plugged into the VGA connection of a monitor with multiple inputs. This would not run 24/7 but would run whenever my sigrig was on, probably.

I would like to know whether this will work out OK, which would be the best 1TB HDD for the job, whether it's worth doing compared to them being in a shared folder on my sigrig, and whether this box has any other server-based uses.

If it will only be on when your main rig is on, it won't be worth doing. Just stick the drive in your main rig.

Running over wi-fi is a terrible idea for a server, and you will get very poor performance.

Server 2008 really won't be happy with that amount of RAM, or that slow of a processor. Server 2003 R2 (also Dreamspark) or Linux would be a better choice, but only if you can wire up a proper network cable.

If you have a SATA port you don't need to worry about the revision - almost always everything will work fine.

After a quick word with the family, if I go ahead with this, they will allow me to put it next to the router downstairs and have it hooked in.

Security on this server would be of concern as financial info would be put on it.
And if it's downstairs it will be on practically 24/7.

I can get a SpinPoint F3 1TB drive with a SATA cable and Molex to SATA adapter for about £46.

I would offer up Amahi Home Server in addition to the other OS's already mentioned, imo freenas would be just great for your purposes.Your server would be protected by the routers firewall as well as it own so...But I'd make sure everything was setup properly(research). Is the server going to serve files out to the net?To take advantage of the hard-drive speeds I'd look into getting a add-on card like the one linked below. So you can run at 3.0 instead of 1.5.But other than that, everything looks fine to me,for what you want to do.

Not to the net, it's just going to be local files, but the net could be an option eventually as long as it is very very very secure.

Amahi looks very interesting.

I forgot to mention, this HDD would also contain TV shows and movies, which would be streamed via wi-fi to my HTPC (well, a spare 754 rig), running Boxee or XBMC
