I suggest heading over to dedicated Android forums like XDA-Developers so you could learn how to root your phone. Usually these days there are programs that do the rooting for you with only a couple of clicks. Takes away the problem of having to learn how to communicate through ADB and whatnot.

While Im not a fan of HTC Sense, I think HTC phones are superior in quality. I have had many issues in the past with Motorola, however, I have not owned any of their android phones..

I would personally go with the X in this case though, due to its larger screen. I have the HTC Evo, and it is TRULY WONDERFUL for web browsing, and forum reading due to its large screen.

Android OS is THE MOST customizable OS I have ever encountered on a phone. You cant go wrong with either. Also, rooting it, further increases the customizability. And you can even go as far as a custom ROM like I did, and further improve performance, AND battery life!

We actually have a 5th line that is upgradeable now. It's an old air card line that was converted to a regular line being that we didn't need it anymore since the small town I was living in got dsl. So I could go update that line right now and ditch this line when it comes due.

Get the Droid X. You'll appreciate the extra screen area. I've used both, but own a Droid X and love it.
