P5B + E6600 noob OC

Yeah, i know this is ancient. Just getting into OC and using what I have.

First, this is a gaming rig. Only reason I even thought about OC'ing was for Call of Duty: BlackOps. If you have this game, you know it runs horribly.

Well, here is what I have so far.

360fsb
vCore 1.35 (Windows seems 1.3X at idle and I've seen it drop to 1.25-1.26 while running Prime. Yes, I even did the Pencil mod and it made no change.)
I manually set the RAM freq to DDR2-720 (CAS 4), just because it gave slightly better benchmarks than running Auto (CAS 5). Also, I did go ahead and manually enter the RAM timings in BIOS. I just entered what CPU-Z reported at DDR2-720. Off the top of my head, 4-4-4-12? 1.8v. This RAM does not have any extra heat dissipation or cooling system. Bare bones.

I disabled all the speedstepping things in BIOS, no issue there.

I have not set any of the other voltages, left them at Stock, and I think that may be my issue. I cannot get passed 360fsb. Even if I bump the vCore up to 1.44 (from 1.35), it wont boot. The PC powers up, no beeps at all, no signal to my TV. I dont know if its a Temp thing, but after a while of turning PSU on/off and rebooting, it will finally boot and I'm able to get into BIOS. For giggles, I let it boot to Windows once and opened BlackOps. I had massive fps drops and the sound was screechy.

I'm starting to think either my PSU cant handle it? I think it's a 500watt, not sure what brand off hand. Or all those voltages I left on Auto, which is all but vCore. Frankly, I didn't know if it was safe to raise vNB on it's stock heatsink. My case has decent airflow, but...

I also tried 400x8 and I got that same low performance issue. Windows all seems fine, but not CPU intensive applications.

At 360x9, I ran Prime95 (blend) for 1hr and 45min. No errors. Temps max out at 50C, usually in the 46-48C range. (CoreTemp)

Overall, I am happy with this speed. This has made a noticeable impact on CoD:BlackOps. At stock speeds, I limited my fps to 71. It would often run at 40-60fps, occasionally dipping to 20-30fps. Now at 3.24Ghz, I rarely dip below 60-65fps and even raised my limit to 111fps and can hold 90-100fps fairly well. (Strange FPS settings, I know. It's a fps + maxpackets tweak to help with hit detection accuracy). I have not done extensive Prime95 tests, but I can play BlackOps for hours (which is generally 90-100% CPU usage) with zero issues at 3.24Ghz.

Now, I'm just wanting to see what the next step is. If possible, can I get to 3.4Ghz and still maintain that 53C area for temps. I dont want to sacrifice temps to gain a couple hundred Mhz. I'll just stay where I am and be happy with 48-50C.

Any input? Thanks guys.

Start testing on Prime to see if it's stable. An overnight test would suffice.

I have ran short tests in Prime and some seriously long gaming sessions using 90-100% CPU. I'm fairly certain this 3.24Ghz 360x9 is stable, but I will do an overnight test tonight.

Even 365x9 won't boot.

I ran Prime95 for 7 hours over night. No errors, heat was fine around 50C. This was at the same 3.24Ghz I've been at.

Anyone have any advice getting beyond this wall? I'd like to try to set the rest of my voltages manually and increase them if needed, but I dont know what they are at stock. Also, Im not sure if that is really needed. Seems like if left at default, they would raise as needed?

Also, my RAM is rated for 1.8v. is all RAM safe to that 2-2.2v area or should I keep mine lower since its rated at 1.8? I have been wondering that for a while. It doesn't have any dissipation or fans, so I'm leery of raising the voltage.

I also have the same CPU as you. I got to about 3.4ghz but then lowered it to 3.27ghz. Runs about 40 idle, 68 load.

Well, i finally ditched my skirt and bumped up my RAM voltage to 1.85v (1.8 rated) and NB voltage to 1.4v and im testing in Prime right now at 380x9 @ 3.4Ghz.

One thing im amazed about. I kept adding pencil to attempt to decrease my vdroop and i was able to get it in much better range. At 3.4ghz, my vcore is 1.3 and CPU-Z reads 1.28 idle and 1.296 at load. Im amazed i can OC that high at this low vcore. Also surprised lowering my vcore from 1.35 to 1.3 really didnt lower my temps. Oh well.

I know no one really cares about this old hardware, but this is my first OC and i am really proud of what i got this setup going to. At stock speed, my 3DMark06 was 11k. I just tested at 3.6ghz and got 15,966! I really wanted that 16k mark. Lol

So i am at 1.37vcore and temps max at 55C @ 3.6ghz. From what ive read, that is impreasive for an E6600 on air cooling. Im going to let Prime run about 7hrs overnight. If that passes, i may drop my RAM to 1.85v and teat again. (1.8v rated RAM)

Also, i have found stability and even my 3DMark speeds increased dropping from a 2x1GB + 2x512MB RAM config, to just 2x1GB. I didnt expect that. (my 3DMark only increased 20 overall score dropping to 2GB)

Yes, this speed increase made a big impact on my BlackOps performance.
