Getting a mech keyboard. Advice?

Thread Starter
Ok so I have some money and want to get a new keyboard since my L key is pretty much done on this eclipse II.

I am interested in the Das line, particularly the one with brown switched because I dont think I would like the clicking. (it might be too loud?) Actually, how loud is the feedback REALLY?

I am also interested in the razer blackwidow ultimate, because I want some backlighting.

Any advice on this? I think my dream keyboard would be brown switches with backlighting and is under $150...but I don't think that exists.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated.

The clicks are roughly the same volume as the sound of bottoming out, but just a little quieter. It's more like the sound that a retractable pen makes, only the click of a retractable pen is louder.

In my opinion, the clicks are somewhat subtle and very satisfying. For me, the clicks add a sense of precision to my keystrokes and make typing an absolute dream (for me).

Additionally, one reason why it's said that the Cherry MX Blues are the best Cherry MX switch for typing is also because of the tactile feedback: it's said to be crisper than the tactile feedback of the Browns. Or, one might say it feels slightly more precise, or pronounced. I can certainly attest to this: I love how the Cherry MX Blues feel!

That's about all I have.

I've got a Razer Black widow and it's really nice to type with, I don't know about the german keyboards but the Razer Black Widow isn't very noisy.

Hi, do yourself the favor and try out different switches before sinking that kind of money into any board. The easiest way is to go to a store that has the black widow on display and try it out. Or grab a cheap Dell AT101/Cherry g80 off of ebay and try them out, this shouldn't cost more then 10-15$ including shipping.
I've gone through cherry blues, cherry clears, cherry blacks, buckling springs, and Black alps sliders, and even though many people like certain switches for whatever reason, you WILL know what is the best for you once you feel them. It took less then a second for me to know my Dell AT102D was the keyboard for me, even though it was the dirtiest, grimiest piece of ... I saw at the recycling place I found it.
If you want to hear how the different switches sound, check out youtube or the audio library over at geekhack.

TLDR: Make an educated decision based on your own feelings, not what people write. It is your hands that will be typing, get the one that feels the best to you.

I love the clicks of the blues. They're not that loud as some people make it out to be.

My friend was against getting blues but after i recommended his gf get the blackwidow for his bday he enjoys the clicking noises they make.

I'm pretty sure Das has a return policy. Look it up, but I'm fairly certain that if you don't like your keyboard, you can swap it for a different one within a month or a year (forgot which).

I personally use MX Browns myself and I love it. I confess I'd like the Blues as well, but hey, GF has to sleep!

I've got a filco majestouch cherry mx blue. I was worried about the sound. But I just love the sound . But I'd probably be annoyed if someone else was typing on mx blue cherry's.

btw they say that the mx blue switches are worse for gaming. That is nonsense. I play ut2004 and double tab all the time.

I too have a BlackWidow Ultimate, I though this is my first mechanical I find I love it. The macro keys are quick and easy to use once you get the hang of it and the multiple levels of lighting though a little gimicy are cool. The black widow was also the only mechanical that I could find with macro keys.

Though I don't know if you game a lot some say that these switches are not the best for gaming though I don't game for 8 hour sessions I will easily do 5-6 hour ones and I have not had any problems.

The gloss though a bit of a fingerprint magnet I have not had any real problems with it since I at least have not noticed a excess of prints on it.

Long story short +1 black widow!
