Intel 6-core CPU's vs AMD 6-core - Page 2

AMD hexacores can't even beat Intel quadcores... let alone Intel hexacores. The 980x will run laps around the best AMD chip.

Ok well my brother who knows a lot more about PC's told me that a more accurate question would have been to ask "I don't have a single program that utilizes all 4 cores, should I upgrade to a 6-core?"

What he is getting at is that the additional money I might spend for scoring higher CPU scores in the benchmark, could be better spent on a better GPU.

How hard would it be to overclock to say, 4.0+ GHz, or an unbeleivable 5.0+ GHz from a sandy-bridge 2600k?

Its all about how much you wanna spend.. Cause the CPU will be obsolete in a year anyway.

Im gonna get a new GPU (570 GTX Im thinkin) and a case that cools better, for my current rig that might be transferred to the next tower I build, and then budget for about a few months and see if I can buy a sandy-bridge 2600k/mobo/ram and let my brother OC it past 4.0 Ghz as better performance for the dollar, based off the information in this thread. I looked up their price on newegg.com and it goes for about the same as what I paid for my Q6700 about 3 1/2 years ago, but seems to offer vastly better performance.

I have a i7 950 and its an amazing oc'er and it performs well, No real need for 6 cores IMO.. Unless you are a heavy multitasker etc..

Yea my brother told me the same, I was thinking future proofing, but now because of this thread Im thinking that Ill just do an entirely new build several years from now if they ever do make programs that require more than 4 cores to run faster.

Excuse me for being a n00b.

The price of the 950 is hard to beat.. it performs better than the 1090T in games and most situations, 950 ftw.

You know what I did.. I kept my eVGA 790i FTW and just swapped out my q6600 @ 3.4 and went for the q9650@ 4.0 and I noticed a big improvement overall and saved a few bucks.. That thing was the easiest oc'er ever..

AMD hexacore is faster than i7-9xx x4's in multi-threaded apps, its just slower in single threaded/gaming type situations.

Honestly before I bought a 980x I'd buy several AMD x6's and boards and get 2-3 computers for the price of one.
