Marvell Sata 6 Gb/s Controller Issues - Rampage III Extreme

Thread Starter
I have an interesting issue with the Marvell Sata 6 Gb/s Controller on the Asus Rampage III Extreme motherboard. When I plug in one hard drive into one of the ports, it is recognized. When I plug in 2 hard drives, they both disappear in Windows 7. But when both are still plugged in, they show up during the start up.

If I take one hard drive and put it in a USB enclosure and connect it via USB, it shows up, and the other drive connected via the Sata 6 Gb/s controller is still there. So I know both hard drives work. It's only when both are connected to the Sata 6 Gb/s controller they disappear. How come?

Did you try the latest Marvell 1.0.0.1036 controller drivers off the Asus website?

Yup, I tried that. The drives appeared for a bit after installing that driver, and I was able to play some videos stored on each, but then Windows Media Player stopped playing the one video off the one drive, and then soon after, both drives disappeared from Windows again.

Are the drives recognized in the bios at least? Think I read some where that the marvel controller can't work in RAID, by default I believe it is set to RAID, or at least it was for me. I would try changing that and give it a go.

any reason why you are using this controller over intel's? No HDD needs SATA6G

The drives are both recognized in the BIOS. The reason I'm using these two are the drives are Sata 3 (6 Gb/s) (yes, I know theoretically that the drives won't approach the limits of Sata 3), but I have no other Sata ports left, as they are all used up. I have 4 other HD's, a SSD drive, and an optical (blu-ray burner) drive connected to the other 6 Sata 2 (3 Gb/s) controllers. I'll try changing it to non-RAID and see if that works.

Last night, I got the latest driver from Asus tech support. Both drives showed up for a bit again after installing the driver, but then after playing a video off one of the drives and it freezing, both drives disappeared again.

Have you updated your BIOS? becuase they implment marvell firmware through BIOS.

I haven't done that. I see that I'm running BIOS Version 1005. I guess 1102 is the latest. I'll have to figure out how to do that... never done it before.

Asus should have a program to do it through windows which is pretty simple.. or through the bios with a floppy or a bios .iso or .bin file. Its a good thing to do with new motherboards.. always update to the latest. Whether the updates affect you or not its still a good idea smile.gif

Also a weird idea but check your cables.. as the cables with the clips if you put both in it can sometimes push the other one down and lose connectivity. Especially the sata plugins facing outward on the edge of the board. Depending on the cables you use.. I had it with a xfx 680i LT board. Took a while to figure out that I needed to use cables with out clips. Worth a look. Unless the issue is strictly happening in WIN7 than its obviously not hardware so disregard lol
