Marvell Sata 6 Gb/s Controller Issues - Rampage III Extreme - Page 3

I've found similar problems on other websites / forums as well, so we're not alone.

Asus hasn't been of help to me. They just told me to look for a hard drive firmware update, and that's about it.

Interesting news about the new Intel Sandy Bridge processors:

"Intel is recalling an untold number of high-end desktop PCs because of a design flaw, and expects the problem to cost the company about $1 billion.

The design flaw affects the Intel 6 (formerly codenamed Cougar Point) support chip, which rides alongside the Sandy Bridge processor on motherboards. The flaw could cause performance problems with devices connected via Serial ATA ports, such as hard drives and DVD drives."

If you can, call them tonight. I made contact with an extremely helpful tech. He said he had to make a few custom notes because asus probably tested only the intel sata (3GB) not the marvell 6GB.

He also said the previous support was ridiculous and this is an indication of hardware failure.

Don't forget to make them note your 980 plate on the underside of your board! You want to get that back. I can't remove mine.

I'll post up the results from the support session once I receive the board back. Post up as well. Here's to new hope this board will be fixed!

So... That is a very interesting piece you found. Do you know the exact issues the 980 causes with the sata drives?

I'm starting to do a little research, but haven't found much info yet.

Well, the 980 is not a Sandy Bridge microarchitecture design... the Sandy Bridge is the successor to the Nehalem microarchitecture design, which the 980 is a part of.

But I did post this news, because it is related to this issue somewhat. The fact that "idahosurge" got his drives to work with the Sata 6G controller indicates that not all Rampage III mobos are defective.

Maybe it does have something to do with the processor, as we have that in common. The Sandy Bridge flaw has something to do with the chipset, which of course is found on the motherboard, but is most often not manufactured by the motherboard manufacturuer. So this specific issue would affect multiple motherboards with the same set of Sandy Bridge chipsets.

I haven't found any specific news related to the design flaw and what could happen, other than the drives connected would stop working. But I believe only the SATA 3G controllers are affected, and the SATA 6G are fine (the opposite of our problems!)

But the bottom line in relation to this story and our problem, is that maybe it has something to do with the 980 processor / chipset moreso than anything. But then again, I see "idahosurge" is running a 980 processor as well, so who knows?

Well... This is interesting. Hm... I'm not sure our issue is caused by that though. Good for future ref.

I would definitely call them and try to work it out again. The tech I spoke to last night said it was ridiculous I was redirected so many times and he's seen this issue before and it's the 1st sign of the sata hardware failure.

Do you have the name of the rep you spoke to?

Any updates?

I added an extra 1TB WD drive using the Sata 6. All my Sata 3's are full so I am forced to use the Sata 6. I only see it in Disk Management as a removable drive but I can't do anything with it.

Spoke to tech support (after an hour plus hold...) the gent stated to install the Marvell drivers again. Which I did. Nothing. He stated it's a windows driver issue, which I kind of believe. I'm on hold right now with tech support. 25 minutes so far, so I have another 30 or more minutes to go until someone in India picks up.

I tried IDE and ACHE without success. In the Marvell control page (during start up) it is showing the single drive but is treating it as an RAID array. When I try to edit the drive config, it get an error stating I need two (2) drives...

Almost ready to get a cheap Sata controller board. I really HATE Asus's customer service... Just plain ......... you know... smile.gif

Sabot --> What was your outcome?

This is the second time I posted today... for some reason, I was logged out on my phone as I posted my last response.

Trey --> I do not have the tech... and I'm going to start looking for him again myself.

I received my motherboard back... and it came back with the status "tested ok." I'm going to test my motherboard again tomorrow. I'm extremely PISSED OFF because I already know the outcome. I may look for sata card as well... I want to use this board... it's been 4 months now. I've been fighting with their tech support for 1/4th a year. Enough is enough...

It peaves me to no end that I have a higher end motherboard that doesn't fully function. I'm definitely not a happy camper and I've used Asus boards close to 10 years. They are close to losing me as a customer. I am going to fight for a resolution on this motherboard. Somehow I knew I would get my board back without a resolution... but I really hoped the tech would've made a differece.

The way I fixed my issue (it was not the fix I was looking for but it will work) I connected my DVD to the Marvell to open up a 3G sata. When I get time, I may try to move the two SSD which are in RAID.

Get in touch with Customer Care Specialist. I will PM you the contact data of the person I talked to. Don't wish to put the info public since it would just make her swamped and unable to help the masses... smile.gif

Be ready to file a small court case which would be a real pain since you have to fly out, hotel, car and other expenses. But it might be the only way to get complete satisfaction. My BBB claim is a joke, nothing happen. A few automated emails, no follow up at all. Good luck!
