Finally found the problem with my 5870!

Thread Starter
After a couple of nights troubleshooting, it appears that my 5870 doesn't run happily at the stock 875/1250 that Sapphire had it clocked at - it'll choke in ~10 minutes of starting OCCT.

Clocking it down to 850/1200 seems to resolve the problems, but I'm still getting artifacts when scrolling up and down in IE8 - seems to be issues with PowerPlay clocking the card to 157/300 after manually setting the clock speeds in the CCC.

I'm tempted not to RMA the card (I don't want to be without it for a month!), and have asked Sapphire if they can provide me with an 850/1200 BIOS.

Just out of interest, does anyone else suffer from flashes when starting to play Flash videos? It seems to occur when the card hits another preset clock speed (for me 400/900).

try different drivers or the original that you got with the card.

mine works better with the originals and not with the latest.

ps ie8 is bound to be full of bugs regardless.

Try 10.4 and 10.5. Most people acknowledge them as the most stable last time I checked.

I've tried every iteration of the Catalysts so far, and my card has had problems at stock speeds with all of them. It's a PITA that it won't work properly at the stock speeds.

Pretty certain that it's not IE8 at fault, my desktop flashes and artifacts over all 3 screens!

I am in the same boat as you. I had bought mine on launch of the 5870 Vapor-x and at first there were not crashes. But over time i started getting vertical line crashes and it was getting annoying to reboot mid game because the computer became unresponsive. I contacted Shappire support and told them whats going on and then they told me to get a new gpu bios. Shappire gave me a new gpu bios but didnt help as much, only solution that has worked is down clocking the memory to 1200 for my card at least. I can go up to 900/1200 and without a crash but as soon its above 1200 it crashes within an hour. But to help your post, if you're getting artifacts just by being in idle i would say its your three monitors. I used to have 2 monitors but the second screen used to flash horribly and sometimes even crash! Only fix i found for that is whenever i use two screens i turn off ATI Overdrive. Seems to fix the problem for me

I'm tempted to modify my existing BIOS and change the clock states to run at a max of 850 and all of the memory clocks to run at 1200. It seems to be the change in memory clock speed that causes flickering on the display - if it's too low, it causes issues scrolling in IE8.

At the moment RBE is showing that state 01, 02 and 04 have the memory speed below 1200 - these are the states that flickering occurs in!

this is a 10.11 and 10.12 catalyst issue.

screen flickering occurs whenever the card switches clocks.

use 10.5a.
