Primary and Secondary PCI-E Slot Question...Please Help :(

So, I hope this is the right category...I wasn't sure.

Here is my question, I have crossfired 5870. I have a Vapor-X Sapphire and an Asus Reference card. As most people know about reference coolers on 5870 they suck in air from FRONT of card and release out the BACK of the card...the Vapor-X cooler sucks air in from the BOTTOM of the card and out the FRONT and BACK. here's why these directions matter...

I'm running Eyefinity and have Sapphires proprietary DisplayPort->DVI adaptor that is 30$ active rather than $130 active. It ONLY works with Sapphire cards. I have crossfire and until now I had the Vapor-X in PCI-E 1 and the asus in PCI-E 2. This is dumb because the Vapor-X is sucking up air from inbeteween the cards, which is hot air off the Asus. So swapped them so the Vapor-X is on the bottom getting cool air and the Asus takes air from the front of the case. HOWEVER! Now the Vapor-X is in the SECONDARY PCI-E Slot and is the "backup" card and I'm not getting a signal to my monitors...furthermore, the active DisplayPort to DVI ONLY works in the Vapor-X card. MY QUESTION:

Can I trick the X58 chipset on my Asus P6T motherboard into thinking the Secondary PCI-E slot is now the primary? That way I can keep my current arrangement AND have the best cooling arrangement. Thanks in advance...+rep waiting.

Can you just switch the coolers on the cards? And how are your temps on the card in this current arrangement?


As for switching primary and secondary cards, I believe there is a setting in CCC for changing your primary ans secondary display adapter.

Edit: Ok looking through CCC, you can only see what the primary and secondary adapter are. I also searched through my BIOS, seeing as how we have the same board (except yours is the Deluxe edition), and I was unable to find any PCIe settings that would change the primary PCIe lane to the second lane. By looking at that, I would guess the only way to set the second card as the primary card would be to find a BIOS for your board that allowed for the choosing of the second PCIe lane as the primary lane, or to find a board with this feature already enabled.

TL;DR: The p6t doesn't support primary lane switching

Much better than my idle temps of 44~54 depending on the outdoor temps, and 60ish on the top card.

Can you switch the the coolers, that's the only way I think you can fix it...

(Am I blind, or can you just switch the cards and put the sapphire on top?)
