With all the above I posted, last night I only thought of ONE scenario where *potentially* I could see replacing a stock top with a high flow one could potentially cause a pump to burn out. I'm not saying this is the issue, but thinking about it some more, it's the only thing I can think of.

A magnetic drive motor spinning at full RPM without a load will not heat up the electronics that drive the stator. If anything, it'll have the opposite effect: it should run cooler since there's no load holding back anything.

Think of it this way; which is harder for you to do: blow air through a straw or blow air through a 6" wide pipe? If you blow air through a straw, it takes you not only longer to exhale a single lung full of air, but it takes more effort on your part.

When you replace the top on the 35x series, you're not actually modifying the pump so the impeller spins any faster than before. However, you are increasing the volume of liquid that the pump can push in a given period of time. That extra volume of liquid does have mass, so it is going to act against the impeller.

This is a complete longshot, but if the stator is heating up beyond what it was designed to run at because the impeller (rotor) is being held back from the extra volume of water present (and the permanent magnets in the impeller is causing heat to be generated in the stator), then I can potentially see why Swiftech is saying that the res top is the cause of the failures (the stator burning out).

The only way to tell for sure is to hook up a temperature probe to the stator in the pump and run a test with a stock top, with a replacement top, and with a res top. If there's a measurable difference in temperatures between the three then you've found your culprit.

Personally, to be honest, I don't think this is what's happening though.

I'm a bit late to the game I know, but it is actually the other way round. The pump will use MORE power at higher flow rates (lower restrictions), not less. Counter intuitive I know, but this has been proven by Martin's test. Note that this graph shows the results of under- and over-volting the pump and is used here to illustrate that the power draw increases with increasing flow rate:



If you go down to the table at the bottom of Martin's test you can get the full test report for the XSPC Res Top and the MCP 355 stock top.

From the individual test results (links above) you can compare the power draw at max flow. The pump with the XSPC top pulls ~28W, compared to the stock ~20.5W.

With the XSPC top you will be going above the stock maximum of 20.5W at ~2GPM, so if the pump is running above that then maybe it would lead to the increased rate of failures.

Although if the rate of failures has recently increased that would point to a change in manufacture or components.

I would be very interested to see what Swiftech say.

Maybe I'm blind but where does it say the XPSC Res pulls 28 W? I see overvolted the pump pulls more (of course) but not due to the top.

I ran one for over a year stuffed in the bottom of my TJ07 with very little airflow, never had any isses. it's still running strong now with the guy I sold it too.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The results for the individual pump tops show the maximum power draw. I put the links in instead of the graphs as they are quite large.

I have edited my previous post, hopefully it is a little clearer now. Best I can do at this time of night.

I placed the pump on a large thermal pad and screwed it down onto an aluminum sheet. The metal does get warm.

Well, I've been running my 355 and XSPC top for almost 2 years every day without problem. Yes, the pump does get hot, however to combat this I have the rad before the pump, and in my antec 1200 I have the pump sitting on top of the middle drive bay, so the top of the 3 fans is blowing directly on to the pump. I guess this has saved my pump
