I can get these for ~$45. My current speakers are some $50 altec Lansing 2.1's. Would this be a good upgrade?

Sorry I guess my reply is too late, but these speakers suffer a serious flaw in the pre-amp stage where there is not enough shielding and can cause interference, ranging from picking up random radio signals when the speakers are turned all the way down, but still powered, to loud popping and cracking when people in your house switch lights on and the fridge pump kicks in etc

Not everyone suffers this, and alot of the time it can depend on the wiring of your house. A surge protector will not prevent this most of the time. I'd just stay away from them.

Lucky I got a full refund because Logitech accept the problem and advise you to do so if you come across the problem. Although I must say, the sound did nearly convince me to keep them, although I was worried they would give up after time.

I've got Logitech X-540.

Even though they're not best speakers in the market, I kinda love them for the price...

They sound pretty smooth for me, and it was well worth it. 1 speaker even broke after 3 years of use, and Logitech sent me a completely new X-540 set about a month ago, without even giving them a purchase receipt (Warranty was over already).

I'm pretty happy with my X-540

I've got a Logitech X-540 and got it re-furbished for $35 and an Altec Lansing Bass Expressionist and both are fine...for me...but sometimes the Altec speakers crackle at high volumes but not the Logitech X-540's so for me if you are happy with 2.1 don't upgrade but for $45 BNew...I'd take it if I wasn't happy with my 2.1.

You saved yourself the money the altecs you have would probably outperform them.
I own the x540 bass is WAY too lacking they tried to compensate the lack of mids with making a mids woofer the bass -.-.

With a quality sound card with an equalizer and Bass Boost, you can fix that issue. I did.

No you can't not with the x540 anyways haha accidentally posted about them instead of the x530s
the x230 (2.1 model) had overpowering bass though and Way too muddy an amp for that sub for a budget system its quite acceptable just dont go past 3/4 volume they start to give out though this is true of most pre built audio systems. I own both sets of speakers btw x530 and x540 the x540 uses a measly something like 4 inch sub i switched mine out for a low powered 8 inch sub that I had lying around and a new box.
