Uhhhh did I burn out my CPU?

Thread Starter
Yeah so I'm just chilling here listening to some music and "TICK (the sound of the power supply ticking off)" black screen, power off, no automatic re-boot.

Peculiar for sure, then I press the power button to get it back running and it only got about %30 booted and "tick".

I re-started again getting into BIOS and figured ok good, if I can get in here all is not lost but after sitting in BIOS for a few minutes "TICK".

I just got back into BIOS and loaded "failsafe defaults" and it got me to my desktop and after sitting there for a few minutes it did the same thing "TICK". No load on the CPU just sitting.

I have my i7 920 Watercooled with this kit and have had it running stably at 3.78 for months without a hiccup.

What component sounds like it's going bad? To kill it dead without self restart under no stress. Hrrrmmmmmmmm

I thank you in advance for your knowledge and wisdom.

Cheers fellas,
JB

Post your system specs so we can help you out more. Sounds to me like the power supply failed, though it could be the motherboard.

You might need to add more vcore. With time cpu's start needing more volts. Maybe that's what's happening here.

I'm talking about a physical tick lick that of the relay used in a PSU. You might hear a "pop" from a sound card during boot or shutdown but that's caused by a voltage spike through the audio line. This is a physical "tick" sound coming from the computer case/PSU. The "tick" in my explanation was for dramatic effect. Not really relevant.

And that clock speed and everything on the sys specs is not correct, I was running at 3.78 but that CPUz was the only e-mail link I could find and figured you'd be able to see the hardware involved.

Yeah so, it won't even get close to booting at 3.78 with upped v core.

If it were PSU, I can't think of a component that would work for a couple minutes and then stop abruptly but a fault could explain why it won't get close to booting in 3.78 if it has to pull more power..... hrmmmmm the troubleshooting begins.

And I apologize for being rude, Thank you very much to the responses. Just trying to figure things out. Arg

Might want to stop using that PSU right now. What PSU is it?
