There is a very simple explanation to this - At 0 AA, the game is not enough of a load for the GPU, so it downclocks to idle or 2d clocks. When you turn AA to 16xQ, it actually uses some of the GPU, causing it to clock up to normal gaming clocks, thus you see a massive increase in FPS.

May not be the cause, but I have experienced this in several games on several systems where the display resolution was low enough that there was not a high enough load to cause 3d clocks.

no... it doesn't even have 2d clocks just 3d and thats it

My GPU idles at 300 mhz at windows, but when I run games it's at 1000 mhz. Thats what happends to you when you run something that dosent stress your gpu enough. Like surfing or playing old games.
