So I let my friend OC my cpu. Dumb, yeah I know. So I'm pretty sure the settings are way off. He has it @ 4.2GHz at 1.4v. I just want it at 4ghz pretty much. Below are my settings:

Extreme Tweaker:

Sync Mode: Enabled
Ai Overclock Tuner: Manual
OC From CPU Level Up: Auto
CPU Ratio Setting: Auto
CPU Turbo Power Limit: Disabled

CPU Configuration

BLCK: 191
PCIE: 100
DRAM: Auto
UCLK: Auto
QPI: Auto

C1E Disabled
CPU TM Function: Enabled
HT Disabled.
Intel Turbo Mode Tech: Enabled

That's all I can think of. Please help me sort this out. I wanna be at 4ghz with lower voltage, 1.4 seems high.

1.4 volts is way too high for that overclock. I would try somewhere between 1.28-1.35. You must be producing heat like....idk what. But i see you have an EK loop so that shouldnt be a problem for you. And why is HT off?

That's what I was wondering. Where do I change the voltage at?

I was going to say 1.4 isn't THAT far off for 4.2 but then I noticed that he had HT turned off... so yeah- that's WAY off. I'm not sure if you really even want HT turned off-
So first thing's first... you want 4.0... okay, well that's easy- question is what are you going to be doing with it after? If you need to drive it at 4.0 all the time with stability and you're not worried about efficiency, we're going to want to get you to turn off all the power saving and speed stepping features in your bios. Are you going to want HT on or off?

At 4.0 with HT turned off you could probably drop your voltage down to 1.3 and change... maybe less. Quite frankly if that's what he's done so far I'm afraid of what other changes he might have made. I'm sure most will agree that when you go into the bios for the first time you go over to "exit" or similar option and choose "restore setup defaults." That will undo any crap he has left over and let us start with a clean slate.

Some might agree with me when I say you should probably go and slap your friend for suggesting he ought to do your overclock for you. That's what I would do.

With that being said, there are a number of walkthrough guides that will take you step by step through the process of doing a proper overclock so you AT LEAST know where to adjust voltages and make conservative adjustments to the bios. Also, learn what it is that you're actually doing, and how to ensure that it is stable. There must be 500 threads in here that involve people being walked through how to OC a 930... please do those of us who want to help a favour and read through at least some of them.

I'll want 4.0 all the time. Definitely. For gaming, and multimedia purposes. I just happened to go through the bios and saw his jacked up settings, so I figured I needed to fix them. This is my first water cooling build, that i just finished today. And do I want HT on or off? I dunno, do I?

For gaming you arguably don't need it... guys say the games today can't benefit from 8 cores (and some can't even use 4) so the higher clocks are more valuable (to them).

Multimedia... don't know- if by that you mean producing your own porn movie in 3d, maybe. If you're downloading music off itunes, probably not. Folding? Definitely on.

Some guys turn it off to get higher clocks on lower voltage- which begs the question why buy a HT capable processor just to turn it off... I don't get it but some people swear by it. Anyway, their choice.

You've got the cooling system for it- 4G is easy to achieve and very comfortable territory for the 930. I won't bother asking why you put a water system on a rig that was going to float around at 4g generating heat that would barely cook an egg... that was your choice

4.2 is the crossover point for the 930- where you start needing a bunch more voltage to get minimal performance gains. ESPECIALLY with HT off... you could probably still tread water at 4.4, but with your multiplier locking at 21 you'd probably be looking at adjusting a lot more settings- skew settings, amplitude, spread spectrum, IOH, IOC... I don't think we're there yet.

4.0 requires so little adjustment you should be able to read up on it really easily. Adjust your bclock to 190, multiplier 21, vcore about 1.3 to start, downclock your RAM frequency to keep it as close as possible to stock...

You have the cooling to manage the higher vcore to start... then as you test stability you can start to drop it down a bit. I think folding kept me hovering around 1.34-1.35 until I broke into 4.2 territory and then I jumped up to 1.39. I'm running a 920 on that rig so my settings will admittedly be slightly off what you're capable of but the efficiency path is about the same.

Read that guide, you will have a great understanding of busses and the voltages that go with them, that guide made me get my i7 930 @ 4ghz 211x9 with 1.272v and HT on .

Hope you sort out those sloppy settings, also if you could check what batch that cpu is we could get some guideline to what it can achieve

Cheers

Batch # is 3938B281. I will be folding, yes. I dont see where to change multiplier. I havent ever worked with this board.
