WAVs are uncompressed audio, FLACs are compressed lossless. FLACs are smaller but how much depends on the level of FLAC compression used, there are 8 levels if I remember correctly.

Yea, but that only has effect on the encoding. It can take twice as long to encode for 10% less file space and have the same bit-to-bit replay. As long as it's above 500kbps, it's good. Many swear by EAC rips and then FLAC level-8 encoding, but the difference is pretty negligible unless you are running PS1000s through a balanced system.

WAVs are archival formats (essentialy analog recreations of a sound digitally) but they take up too much space, so the solution was audio compression.

If you are going to spend the money for a sound system, individual song purchasing shouldn't be a goal. Hi-fi is a volume business; buy CDs and vinyl.
