EDIT: Also, is there a risk if the drives are running 24/7? Big torrenter, will probably leave this on for weeks on end, shutting down if only to swap out some components or clean the case.
It has a 3 year warranty, why do you have to worry about failure? I have 3xWD20EARS I want to get 5 more. So far none have failed and I have filled one to 2TB no problems. I have the newest 00MVWB0 revision drive I got from Amazon.com. Most should have the newest 00MVWB0 revision already which is considered more reliable than the first few versions. I wouldn't worry about hard drives dying, I still have my IDE 120GB Western Digital Caviar SE from 2003 that won't die yet. It refuses to let my SATA drives takeover.
If he's just using it for storage for like anime it's not going to matter much. I can playback videos stored on the Green drives without any stuttering or slow downs. But Caviar Blacks are kind of overkill for just storing files for media usage i.e. HTPC stuff unless he needs the extra read/write speeds then the Green drives will work fine. But if he has the money and is willing to spend it then he can get a full 8 bay Caviar Black 2TB tower. LOL, expensive though at $179 each but hey if you have the money then why not right? But he can always do a combo if he's worried. You don't have to go all Green drives but I would to save power. 1 Green drive and a Black drive and just keep adding more 2TB drives as needed.
As for my Green drives they're practically on almost 24/7. Haven't died yet or had any problems. But it's not like he's going to access the 8 drives at the same time 24/7 it's just going to sit there and idle.
