Question of possible upgrade to 2600k

Thread Starter
I currently have what is in my profile and I can sell some parts of it to upgrade to a 2600k. The question I have should I or should I wait for 2011 or the next socket.

I can sell my Q6600 at 3.4 Ghz with Tuniq Tower and 4 gigs of my G.Skill PC-8000 with my Asus p5K-e mbd for 300 dollars.

I would want to get a 2600k and a Asus P8P67 Pro with 4 or 8 gigs of ram that I have not decided on yet as far as brand and timings and a Thermalright Silver Arrow cooler.

Do I upgrade and spend the difference if 300 is a decent price for what I am selling or do I wait? Thanks all....

You can either wait or upgrade now.

Each way you put it, it's going to be much faster than your current system.

Q6600 is still a great CPU, more than enough for anything when Overclocked, but when compared to SB, it will make it look like a slow diesel truck.

It's also better to sell your stuff now, since it's going to lose much of its value this year.

For gaming purposes NO as your system is GPU bottlenecked anyway..

For general usage YES,especially for multithreaded applications..

I think you would be better off upgrading now especially if you can get 300 for your current.

ASUS P8P67 PRO - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131682

Intel Core i7-2600K - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070

Noctua NH-D14 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835608018 (1 of the best Air Cooling there is)

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231407 (will work on board and fit under the Noctrua, will clock down to 1866 and tighten the timings)

Total cost (Newegg...u could shop around too) $764.96 - $300...total upgrade cost $464.96 for a system that can go toe to toe with an i7-980x.

I like your response bratas, but the new 2011 is a new socket? Is it worth waiting for that or just do it now...

I think the main question is how much are you willing to shell out for a platform upgrade?

LGA-2011 will be high-end so expect prices to be high, too. At the very least, I'd budget $300 for the motherboard and $300 for the CPU. We also don't know the state of overclocking on LGA-2011. A $300 CPU will be entry-level in this category. If you want unlocked multipliers, it's possible you might need to pony up at least $500 for the CPU. This is merely conjecture, of course. We don't really have anything concrete on Sandy Bridge-E or Ivy Bridge (whichever one Intel releases) right now. I'm just pointing out one of the possibilities.

Sandy Bridge mainstream is a sure thing and we already know what the prices are. It's a nice upgrade to LGA-775 that won't break the bank.

Also is this cooler overkill - Thermalright Silver Arrow cooler, I just want it to be at around 4.2-4.5 and I will be happy, what is the best cooler for the cheapest price to obtain these speeds?

If you do upgrade then you will want to do the video card as well since, as KingT said, you are basically already kind of at a bottleneck with your current system.

You can always sit around and wait on the next best thing but then you will be stuck with what you have now for a long time. If you have the money then I would say go for the upgrade. If not, save up and by that time, if there is something better out it will be an even bigger upgrade for you.

If you don't upgrade, I would at least upgrade your GPU for now.

good luck to you

I have the money and I am awaiting the gtx560 to see what that does then I will upgrade the video card. I had the Q6600 for at least 3 years maybe and just want my next build to be another 2-3 years possibly.
