Suggestion for a second camera?

I currently have Cybershot H55 which is a nice camera overall, and its panoramic mode is a nice feature. The 14mpix image looks good on my 11x17 prints.

I still plan to keep this one for every day photo but I need something better for that real special moment.

Most P&S camera including my H55 has small image sensor, which makes it rather weak or poor for night time shot.
The one picture I took (attached) is done with 3 seconds shutter and ISO of 100. Higher ISO resulted in grainier picture :/ Also all my P&S camera (all of them I had in the past, not just the H55) could never take good northern light in my area. The image always ended up too dark and not usable even with adjustment in photoshop, or grainier than old analog off-the-air broadcast TV.

Movie mode (if any) will probably not be used, I already have decent 720p out of my H55 and I still have my DV camera with alleged 1000x zoom for every day 480i videos.

What I would like: lens that are interchangeable (just about all DSLR), large image sensor, auto focus, easy to use manual focus for when auto can't be used, and manual shutter setting (30 seconds or more) for night time exposure like the water fall picture or such. I would like 2 lenses, a standard one around 20mm to 50mm and a long zoom lens that lets me catch wildlife from about 1000 feet.

One that seems to stick out so far is Canon D7 but I'd like a few options and opinions before I commit to buying one. Budget is not really an issue but I'd like to keep total (including 2 lenses, memory card (16GB probably), and 1 spare battery) to under 2G's Buying in USA.

Ok why a Canon T2I? Also some lenses I can understand but it seems I may not need all of them.

50mm f/1.8 II Standard AF Lens looks like a non zoom with auto focus.

2X Autofocus Teleconverter doubles the zoom. Would I need that if I used 500mm lens?

My recommendation

Gives you video capabilities plus all you're looking for.

Although disclaimer: I'm absolutely horrible at estimating distances so I'm not sure if this will reach 1000ft or far surpasses it. However, given your budget, this is the only combination that really works (short of the 75-300mm, but that lens annoys me with its IQ to no end).

1000ft (almost 1/5 of a mile) is a very very long distance....and without knowing exactly what you are shooting its a bit hard to judge what lens to get.....but here goes....

t2i body
150-500 sigma

now that should give you a bit of money for that 16gb card (if you dont like non canon batteries buy a regular t2i kit with 18-55 and just add a battery).

ps. there is no canon d7, i am guessing its the canon 7d and its far too expensive for a 2000 budget with a super telephoto.

i am going to take the liberty to answer for YSBL....

because the t2i is the a good cheap body.

50mm is for low light shots

500mm + teleconverter is for the animals 1000ft away.

Thanks for clarifying the distances. As you can see with my setup, I don't have much experience/need for telephoto photography
post #7 of 10
personally ive never shots animals at 1000ft either but its the cheapest super telephoto with AF and IS.

It's mostly deer that I wanted to photograph as I have a pond in the backyard (about 800 feet to the nearest part from my house, about 1000 feet to the farthest part) and deer frequent this area for food and drink. However they are easily spooked by people as it's not a deer petting farm So hence the long distance photography
