How to get my 3TB Drive Recognized

Thread Starter
Hi:

I have a new system set up. See specs below. I just installed Windows 7 64 on a 300GB Velociraptor and want to use the new 3TB Hitachi drive as a data drive. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it is not listed under the hard drives under "Computer."

I have installed all the drivers for the motherboard and updated W7. Windows won't allow me to format the drive. With an earlier installation of W7 I changed the drive to GPT Disk but then W7 would not start and I reinstalled.

I have the latest BIOS F7A. However for a 3TB data disk I don't think it is necessary. Now with the new install the option to covert to GPT is not available. Does anyone know what I need to do to use my new drive. Do I need to assign a drive letter? Right now it says "system reserved." I also see it listed as a Primary Partition of 2048 GB NTFS and Unallocated 746.52 GB. I am using AHCI in case that matters. Thanks a lot, Kent

No. Windows won't let me format or delete. I haven't tried assigning a letter to it. At this point I wanted some help so I wouldn't have to install W7 again. Should I try assigning a letter to it. Thanks for the help.

So in disk management, when you click on this in DM.

It wont let you format it, or assign a drive letter?

^This, also I believe GUID is also needed for 2TB+ drives? Could be wrong.

It won't let me format but I will try the letter assign now. I don't see initialize anywhere but maybe I am missing the obvious. Thanks.

I just assigned D to it but I still can't format. I will restart the computer to see if that helps.

That didn't help. I still can't format or find where to initialize. I will keep looking.
