Need Help with a Build

Thread Starter
Hi guys, its been a while since I kept up with builds and pc parts. I need an ultra cheap build but something decent for my mother. She will be using it for general paperwork, emails, chating, and browsing. She wont be doing anything intensive, probably no gaming but maybe occasional movie. Focus of the build will be heavily on price but decent enough to last her a few years. Reps to anyone that contributes to a successful build, even if its not your suggested build! I want to focus on staying under 400$ USD .Thx guys

Here's my build:

Choose 1) i3-540 @ $390 or 2) Athlon II 260 @ $ 335 for CPU/MB combo (price incl. shipping):
1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.580871
2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.581118

and then the rest stays the same:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152185
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106335
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811108211

Good quality, decent cooling, will last a good few years worth of "mother-level" punishment.

Edit: that combo will be hard to beat, though the component quality level is lower (except the motherboard/CPU which are fairly great). That processor is fine, and you won't need to OC at all for your mother. Note that the CPU in the combo is OEM - you will need to purchase a heatsink/fan for it still.

Good move.

CPU Cooler? Yes, you need it. Just follow the links in the combo to the CPU to confirm for yourself.

good options:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835226029
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186035
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233022
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103075

Edit - I've noticed that the included motherboard only has 4pin cpu adapter, and not much cooling to speak of so overclocking won't go far and could be dangerous beyond a point. This is a shame, because that CPU has been shown to unlock to triple or even quad cores on occasion. I would think a triple might be possible on that mobo, but I would be too scared to aim for a quad.

In that light, I would get the SilenX cooler tower and remove the useless CPU cooling vent thingy inside the case, perhaps add another cooling fan at the front of the case to get some more airflow in there.

Video Card? probably. The MB has VGA built in on the geforce 7025 chip. That's crap.

I would go with any ATI 5450 through 5570 (which have major rebates right now).

5450 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121377
5550 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121407
5570 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127546

Note that these above all have HDMI native outputs - incredibly useful if movies are to be involved.
