Multi Media AMD build

Thread Starter
Hey everyone! Just stopping by to get some help for an AMD build. My friend wants to make a PC for about $500 (US). I have not built an AMD system yet, and would definitley like to try building an AMD system. He wants to use the computer for watching movies, and flash games. Is it even possible to throw a new monitor in there too? Thanks in advanced

I didn't put a monitor in there but that comes to about $410 after rebates.

jasonhardin: Oh my, that is one expensive DVD drive (counting shipping). That and the RAM is an absolute no no, any 1333 CL9 RAM requiring 1.65V should be immediately taken out of a system and thrown in the garbage.

Go with this build suggestion from yours truly:
Athlon II x4 640 - $99
Biostar A880G+ - $55, $45 AR (Video card won't be necessary for this build)
Rosewill Blackbone - $35 shipped after promo code
Antec NEO ECO 400C - $48 shipped
OCZ Special Ops 2x2GB 1600 CAS8 - $45 shipped
Samsung F3 1TB on Superbiiz - $51.48 shipped via promo code HELLO2011
Lite-ON 24X DVD - $16 shipped after promo code

Total: $349.48 before rebates
Total after rebates: $339.48

If you take out the power supply and add this GTS 450 + Antec NEO ECO 520W combo it is a solid build that amounts to $451.48, $421.48 AR.

LMAO!!! Oh no $20 bucks, yes I just grabbed one as he can find one at the time of actual purchase to buy for less. It's a DVD drive, if he needs someone to show him the exact lowest priced one and can't choose something like that for himself then he probably shouldn't be building a pc.

EDIT: Yes that is my bad, I was looking at the Save amount LOL Yes he can get a cheaper DVD drive, I paid 16.99 shipped for mine when I got it.

As far as the memory, he did not say he was going to be overclocking so CL 9 will do just fine for a basic build. And again by the time he gets around to actually purchasing it I'm sure there will be something else that is cheaper/better.

I put this together as a follow along and didn't set it in stone for him.
There are a million different configurations out there that he can do, this is just some of the items for a $500 build.

My REAL suggestion......save more money and get better parts.

CL9 will do fine for a basic build... but not 1333 CL9 1.65V that is unacceptable for any build, as an absolute firm standard all 1333 CL9 RAM must not require more than 1.5V. Besides also if you can get 1600 CL9 or CL8 for the same price then you should by all means go for it. Lower timings can make the system slightly snappier especially in application load & boot times.

all looks perfect for the budget , but i would add this PSU for a little future proof , i've been reading very good review about it , Here is full HD monitor for 144.99$ (-10$ MIR) very nice product for the money and fits ur budget
good luck !

That PSU would be way overkill. The antec NEO is perfect for this build and gives plenty of room to put a nice single GFX card in there down the line if he ever wants to play real games. No reason to spend almost twice as much on a PSU he wont ever use.

And that exact same monitor is a bit cheaper here and shipped free if that makes any difference to the OP ~> EDIT: didnt compare to MIRs not a big difference here in price

So I went ahead and ordered most of xd suggestions. Though I did choose Jason's RAM choice. And added the HD monitor with it, He is an avid movie watcher. No OC'ing this thing just basic movies and some light gaming. My buddy is an xbox fanatic haha. Thanks alot again for your help guys really appreciate it :-D.
