Creative for music and gaming, Asus/Auzentech/etc. for music. You do have to mod the Creative's OpAmp to bring out the true capability of the DAC though.

Seemingly randomly, the output will start popping, crackling, etc. If I let it continue, it gradually gets worse and worse, going from slightly tolerable to unbearable. Happens frequently when I'm watching DVDs or listening to music.

Sometimes closing the application and reopening it will fix it; other times, I go into the Creative control panel and switch modes ("entertainment", "gaming", etc). And then sometimes I just have to restart.

Doesn't that make sense? We use the one we like? Unless if you're suggesting we recommend a sound card that we won't use to someone else
