Planning My First Build. Is it doable?

Thread Starter
Ok, so before I list my parts, I must explain that all of these presumed parts will be going in this HTPC case:

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1319&ID=1426

I, however, am not trying to build an HTPC in the sense that I don't about it being silent, and will not be putting the bare minimum of power in the thing.
I want this do be a decent rig to do my audio production on and get into some solid PC gaming. It just so happens that the only open spot in my entire room is one slot in my home theater shelf just big enough for an ATX HTPC case. That is why the case choice was made. (Admittedly an impulsive buy, and not the best case out there, but I flake on projects if I let them go too long without committing to them)

Now that I've explained, here is what I'm thinking:

i7 2600k
GA-P67A-UD5
RealSSD C300
Caviar Black 1TB
HD6870 CrossFire
Seasonic X-850
4GB Ripjaws X Series DDR3

As for cooling, I need to measure inside the case myself to see what I can fit. I don't buy the 100mm height limit Thermaltake lists on their site. The case is over 150mm tall. My main question is, do you think this doable in that case? I plan on replacing the twin 60mm fans in the back with dual 80s and swapping the 120mm for a better one. (More fans also a possibility) If I do that, get a solid cooler, and keep my cable management good, would I be okay heat-wise? (with a small overclock of course. I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to at least attempt an OC).
Also, the obvious "DON'T BUY THOSE THINGS, THEY ARE TERRIBLE" type advice is also welcome.

Thanks in advance.

you will be severely restricted by height. the 100 mm limit is due to the fact of the mobo standoffs and space behind the mobo. You would honestly be better off getting a Mountain Mods Plateau . It is a much higher quality case that will give room for expansion and whatever cooling you want, even a full waterloop. Silverstone CW03 is honestly your best option in my opinion. It gives you more clearance, looks better, and is higher quality than thermaltake. Avoid thermaltake if you can. It is just mediocre. Both the CW03 and plateau can fit nearly any cooler you want while providing enough airflow for nearly any components

SB doesnt seem to have a lot of problems with heat from what I've seen and it should be fine in that respect, I'd be a little worried about the graphics cards though, as two sandwiched together in a small space will heat them up.

All the same, I reckon it will be Ok, just dont be expecting low temps off your GPU because of the lack of airflow through the case.

PS. Nice build

It does seem possible to me but I would really be worried with Crossfire in that case. Make sure to buy cards that blow the hot air out of the case, as the non-reference coolers that have a fan in the middle could cause issues

Thanks for the responses guys. As far as the GPU heat is concerned, I was considering placing a system cooler by the cards to exhaust more air . Possibly this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835114024

It has an exhaust blower and an adjustable fan to direct airflow at the cards.

Does something like that that seem like a plausible solution, or would you just recommend that I get one higher powered card and give up on CrossFire?

Thanks for choosing AMD GPU, we are Red(Green?) Tide!
BTW, it will be uber if you use Corsair H70, trough it water it still average CPU Cooler and should fit with your case, you will not have problems about airflow

IMHO, getting one GPU is ALWAYS a better option that going SLI, Crossfire, or buying a dual GPU card. The one card will be much more compatible than 2 cards or a dual gpu card and this will be nice once you have it. Plus, you wont have to worry about heat as much since there is only 1 card. Some games dont support dual-gpus at all and some simply have lower performance than a single card would but still work. Also, ATI's drivers really aren't that great so that is another reason that i would not recommend this, SLI is better than Crossfire due to better drivers, but one powerful single-gpu card is the best option unless you are just going nuts with 2 or 3 580's or something like that.

sorry for the wall of text but i am really enjoying typing right now for some reason.

if money is not an option then get the 580 for sure, fastest single-gpu out right now. otherwise go with an HD5870 or HD5860 if you plan to do crossfire in the future, the 5870 is more powerful than the 6870, the 6870 is just more efficient.

i second this, the H70 is a good cooler where space is limited and it is super easy to install! Good product if space is not an issue though i like big heatsinks cause they just look awesome! like my D-14

EDIT: sorry for the double post

Cobra and Colt, I have looked into the Corsair Hydro series for the same reasons you suggested, sadly my case doesn't have a single spot to put the rad. It's only 120mm fan is mounted behind the front panel. Not only is its airflow restricted, but it would definitely not fit the added width of the double fan and rad setup of the h70. Thanks for the advice though. If I don't get the performance I want from a heatsink, I may just buy a dremel and mod the case to fit a 120mm fan at the rear. That will take some added bravery on my part though, being a first timer and all.

well if you dont mind doing it now, then i would just mod it. Its just a few holes, what could go wrong? measure twice, drill once and be sure your math is right and you are good to go! the H70 is worth it, very, very cool for the money and it will outperform any heatsink that you could fit in there normally by a lot, only the D-14 and its new cousin (cant remember the name, but they are basically the same thing) outperform the H70 and they are HUGE!

If you are feeling especially brave and want to spend a little more money then go full water cooling, i have never done one but it will keep your PC the coolest by a lot and you can put the rads wherever you want, just be sure to fill it and run it before you put any power into the system because you dont want it to leak there is a watercooling thread on here if you are interested and want some guidance, they will help you out the whole way without asking for anything in return! (well, maybe a few pics of your new rig)
