Noob here; need to OC Phenom II x4 965 to 3.8GHz - 4GHz

Thread Starter
Hey there,

I'm relatively new at overclocking CPU's, and I need some help overclocking my Phenom II x4 965 (C3) to 3.8GHz--or more preferably--to 4.0GHz.

At first, I hope to see how high I can OC without having to mess with voltages. Once I've been able to do that, I really want to see what it would take to hit 4GHz (I've noticed that quite a few 965 owners have a stable 4GHz OC).

My idle temperature with a CM Hyper 212+ is 28.3 C, and load hits between 44 and 46 C.

All of my relevant system info is in my signature below.

Any advice, input, and help is much appreciated!

3.8 is easily achieved a stable 4ghz is more difficult,
cooling is most important,
ur hyper should be fine.
Go up on the multiplier first see how high that will allow you to go with gradual increases to voltage tbh most people including myself run 1.5v for 4ghz 19x on the multiplier was as high as mine would allow me to go and maintain stability then increase the rest on the fsb 1.3v on the nb aswell and you should be ok dont expect it to pass 8hrs on prime95 tbh if you can pass an hour or two it will be ok for day to day use.

Ok - so I've overclocked it slightly at first; 18.5 * 200 = 3700 (3.7GHz), but I need some input.

While running HW Monitor, I noticed that my CPU is constantly using 111.3 Watts of power (it's maximum power usage). Usually, if I play a game like Bad Company 2, the power usage will be maxed--which is normal. However, it should not sit at 111.3W on idle. Idle power usage is usually around 14W or so.

Is there any reason why the power consumption is at max after this slight OC? All that I've changed is the multiplier (put it to 18.5 instead of 17).

Ok. Here the breakdown on that you need to know for ocing any athlon II and phenom II cpu on air.
1) Max cpu voltage is 1.55v.
2) Keep temp under 55c.
3) NB frequency take it as high as you can take it and stable.
4) CPU/NB voltage max 1.45v. This the voltage for NB Frequency.
5) Keep HT around 2000.

Thanks for the info -- but this is already contained in the guides that Faster_is_better linked in his post above.

What I need is input on my last post.

The power consumption is not right. I oc a 1090T and it reads 130w at 4.0ghz, which is not right.

That post honestly doesn't make much sense.

Surely there's someone on these forums that could answer my previous questions?
