Sandy Bridge + Board vs New Costum WC Gear

Thread Starter
Hi guys!

For weeks I have researched and looked up WC parts to finally complete my custum setup sellection.

I have saved up some money in order to get a new GTX 595 or AMD 6990
but now I am undecided wheiter to get a new GPU and some nice WC gear that would allow me to overclock my i7 950 some more or to get the new sandy bridge with a p67 board and none of the above.

So what do you think?
A new card + WC gear?
Or the new sandy bridge with a p67 board and stick with my GTX 295?(SB+Card+p67 board might also be possible dependig on the EU price)

What do you think would be the more reasonable purchase?

I like to keep it real simple, go with something that fits your case

Any 360 Rad in your price ranage
Heat killer or Switchtec I7 Water Block
D5 Adjustable pump
1/2 barbs
1/2 lines
You can go with a rest or like the DD moonsoon to fit your D5 inside

If your just doing your CPU, if you plan to do your gpu I'm a fan of a 420 and everything in one loop
You can also do a 240 second rad if you can fit it for your GPU.

Thank you but I have already sorted out my WC setup
https://www.aquatuning.at/shopping_c...31e8b4ad16ea5a

The sandy bridge won´t bring that much of a performance gain compared to an overclocked i7 950 ..merley 20% yet everbody is so eager about getting one.

I thought purchasing a GTX 595 would be lucrative right now ...but Kepler which will be 3 times more powerful than fermi according to Nvidia and it is planned for 2.Quartal of 2011 ....so WC gear will cost max 400$ + 700$ for dual fermi or kepler

Sandy bridge + P67 board will be around 600-700 $ and I won´t be able to use my Triple Channel Kingston Hyper X DD3 so I will have to purchase new RAM as well with it.

So again what should I get?
And if possible review the WC parts I have chosen in the link above.

Sharkoon cold light cathodes twin UV - 30cm (Art.Nr.: 89038)
> 5 in stock Germany > 5 in stock Germany
7,05 €* 7,05 €*

Mayhems Pre-Mix X1 UV Green 1000ml (Art.Nr.: 30198)
5 in stock Germany 5 in stock Germany

I would skip both of these, Not a fan of lights just go with distilled and ptnuke or a kill coil, cheaper and same stuff almost 8 bucks for fake watter?

Also whats the deal with your sizes? Either go 1/4 or go 1/2 your pump is 1/2 and everything else is 1/4 you going to mix and match?

If you bought Sandy Bridge you could simply use 2 of the three sticks from your i7 Ram. RAM sticks are locked into a particular channel configuration, so don't worry about it. Sell the other stick on OCN.

Yes forget the Premix I will go with distilled water and Mayhems Biocide it is slightly more efficient than PT-Nuke

As for sizes ...I chose half inch tubing with half inch barbs for the block because it can´t fit 2 half inch compression fittings and the rest will have compression fittings ....the D5 Vario already has in and outtake fitted for half inch tubing so I wil only need clamps for the pump

Radiator and Waterblock are among the best at the moment
I will either choose the Mountain Mods UFO or the 800D not sure yet ...maybe some other better and cheaper watercooling cases will arrive in 1.Quartal

That settles the WC pl also answer the question below as well as the above one.

Oh yeah and I got 12 GB of RAM so the rest would go to waste

I'm assuming you have 6x2GB right now? Perfect! You could put 4x2 GB into your Sandy Bridge motherboard and sell the remaining 2x2GB as a perfect kit for any other dual channel memory user.

I believe I could do it that way...but my question is if the sandy bridge is really worth buying.

Compared to an i7 950 on water on 4.5 or 4.6 their will only be a very small performance gap compared to the SB.

As for RAM performance...I am sure that 12 GB of RAM will perform better than 8 GB despite the new memory controller.

So purchiasing a chip that has a maximum 20% performance gain to its predecessors and additionally being forced to buy a new board as well which will inhibit you of full use regarding your RAM seems kind of redundant to me ...still everyone wants to get it.
Why is that?

But if it was possible for me to squeeze SB and Board and a GPU in it would you people still recommend a decent WC and GPU over that?Because SB is just not worth it and I should wait until Ivy which will show a dramatic increase of performance?

a) You probably won't hit 4.5 GHz as a 24/7 OC on that 950

b) Sandy Bridge can hit above 5 GHz on sane voltages. I heard of someone who had a golden chip and it did 5.3 GHz/1.38v.

Personally I would get WC and SB now, then get that new GPU you were talking about later. Ivy bridge is going to give: Quad Channel memory and more PCI lanes, but the difference probably won't be too large. It's also going to have 6 and 8 core processors, however they will most likely be priced similarly to the 970/980X line right now, with a minimal 6 core coming in at $400 or so.
