Sandy Bridge + Board vs New Costum WC Gear - Page 2

I am already hitting 4.4 with my i7 950 on air.
I recieved a very cool chip too...I am currently at 1.30 Vcore with 70 degrees on 100% load.

I would consider buying this chip if the performance difference to an i7 would be in the likes of 5 GHZ stock.

Buying a chip + board not based on its overall stock performance as instead overclocking abillity doesn´t seem very smart to me.

And let us be reasonable. ..what measureable real life difference will be noticeable compared to a 4.5 950? You won´t benefit from it in games ...and HT with 5GHZ or 4.5 won´t really make the difference so applications etc also won´t really see much difference.

The only thing of remarkable distinct will be the Benchmark results.
And is 4 points more in Cinebench and SuperPI really worth a new chip and board for 700$?

Considering that CPUs usually score <10 in Cinebench an increase of 4 points is huge.

Hmm those results are very interesting.

I have attached a screen of my cinebench 11.5 results when I was at 4.1 GHZ and 12 GB RAM.

And no it wasn´t a rethorical question!

In fact I think it is a very justified and reasonable question to ask.
Are 700$ dollars really worth spending in order to gain some points in a benchmark? Is that really a valid and rational reason to spend that kind of money?Especially when you already own a chip so close to this marginal performance gap?

As Intel has stated the SB is not a revolutionary chip as instead an evolutionary ....meaning that its purpose is to minorly improve not substitute!

Performance improvement should be provided by the chip itself not by its capability of being further overclocked.
Only then does it validate its reputation of true efficiency gain.

I would def. go for gtx595 + wc for it.
Wait for next gen of sandy, like its been said already by charliehorse, it will have x2 ram b/w compared to current cpus.

For one thing, overclocking potential should be included as one of the determining factors as it will affect overall performance. If Chip A had a stock speed of 3 GHz and could be overclocked with WC 500 Mhz and Chip B had a stock speed of 2.5 GHz and could be overclocked 1.5 GHz with WC, which chip is faster? (Assuming the same architecture).

Anyways, I've done some calculations:

i7 9(2/3/5)0 @ 4.5 GHz estimated Cinebench Score: 8.32
i7 2600k @ 4.5 GHz estimated Cinebench score: 9.12

Now, if you take into account the added overclocking potential:

i7 2600k @ 4.7 GHz estimated Cinebench score: 9.52
i7 2600k @ 5.0 GHz estimated Cinebench score: 10.13
i7 2600k @ 5.3 GHz estimated Cinebench score: 10.74

So depending on the quality of the chip you could be getting anywhere from a 1.2 to 2.4 point boost, a decent but not amazing result. I just don't know if that's worth it or not.

First of all thank you for the post

Secondly let´s analyze your little example.
What you should keep in mind with speeds and comparison of chips is the FQ.
The FQ also known as the frequency quality is a crutial factor in performance.
As you are certainly aware of ,4GHZ is not always 4GHZ
Fore example i7 950 and i7 920 ..Both chips can be overclocked to 4 GHZ,yet most i7 950 chips perform better at that speed.
One very important factor here within the FQ is the stock speed and the percentage the chip has to be overclocked considering his stock speed to achieve our 4GHZ .

Most i7 920 also require higher voltages and therefor create more heat which most commonly results in worse performance as the chip is stressed more and tends to throttle at a certain stage of voltage pushing.

Ultimately it very much matters what stock speeds the chip has and how much it has to be overclocked to result in a certain speed.

i7 2600k @ 5.3 GHz estimated Cinebench score: 10.74
At 4.1 I hit about 7.16 to 7.20 points
At 4.5 I hit about 8.55 to 8.60 points
With my i7 950 1.26 - 1.34Vcore

The Sandybridge performs max 8.80 - 8.92 points in Cinebench 11.5
So the performance gain is not only marginal as instead not worth mentioning

By my calulations the SB has an 15.2 % performance increase and that only by speculated and yet to be confirmed specifications it will probably be less.
So the only advantage the SB will have over its predecessors is the ability to be overclocked further and pushed harder with the corresponding requirement of less voltage.

In my oppinion that is not worth a buy
