Acrylic Questionair

Thread Starter
I'm looking to work with acrylic.

My questions are:
1)What's the best kind of acrylic to work with a computer case?
2)Where is the best place to order such acrylic?
3)What's the best tool for cutting acrylic aside from a table saw? Can a dremel do it?
4)What should be used to seal acrylic together? In other words, how do you put the pieces together?
5)What's the best method for measure acrylic? ie - I want to measure out screw holes in certain places?

I'm no acrylic master but i will relay what information I have.

1) Cell cast is typically more desirable.

2) TAP Plastics, Delvies, US Plastics, Mc Master-Carr

3) You can use a table saw, circular saw with high teeth count. You can also use a dremel with the proper plastic cutting blade.

4) weld-on #4

Greetings, Omega.

1) Cell cast acrylic (as opposed to "extruded") is favorable when working with power tools as the former will not congeal and melt.

2) The least expensive stuff can be on ebay, Delvies or US Plastics.

3) The simplest way is to score and snap. And yes, a Dremel with a spiral bit will cut acrylic.

4) Weld-On 3 or Weld-on 4 (4 is "fast-setting") will yield a molecular bond, much like a weld.

5) Not sure what you mean, but I prefer to use metric as I suck at fractions.... or maybe you mean templates?

I mean like - if I wanted to measure out a motherboard dimensions and it's screw holes to drill into the acrylic. Another example: a fan hole and it's screws. what's the best way or tool of doing it?

Also, this might be a direct question for syrillian but anyone can answer:
How would one tackle sealing the case up? Like for example, let's say I made a simple box out of acrylic: how would one make it so I can close and open the box back up because clearly you can't or wouldn't want to seal the box from the inside what's optimal for a computer? Hinges I was thinking at first but that wouldn't lock and would be free swinging. A latch of some sort?

For Mobo measurement: I use a dead S478 ATX board.

You can also DL the specs... sorry no link atm.

As for hinges: This is the fun part, you can choose any type of cabinet hardware. Catches or clasps can also be purchased.

If you want to use acrylic, TAP Plastics does have plastic hinges (piano hinges as well as smaller ones), as well as plastic catches.

I have used them, but the hinges have a tendency to squeak, and the catches are a little to "clingy" for small doors (a rather violent tug is required to open the door)

Here is a link to a place that I shop for Hinge hardware. If those are too ornate or decorative, you could try Home Depot, they have a large selection of hinges that are plain and come in several different colors and finishes.

@Syrillian
I've been using #3 and wish it set faster, thanks for the info about #4. +

I found a Local place here in San Diego, with a "scrap bin" any thing in it is 2$ a pound, Lets just say I got more than I could carry

This place has Acrylic hardware, I got 16" long hinge for like 2$ and it can be solvent welded on with IPS #3/#4

Its not TAP but for me its local so yeah.

Another way to hold together your case is to use these threaded acrylic cubes.
