Project Icarus - how high can it go before something melts?

Hi everyone,

I am going to start this project build thread aside from my every day AMD X4 965 gaming rig and focus on having fun with overclocking.

I have decided to build a Socket 775 system, so using probably a Celeron D or Pentium 4 and seeing how high I can overclock it.

Looking at the records for overclocks I think im on the right course:

http://valid.canardpc.com/records.php

I think I might be planning on using a Celeron D or just a Celeron as the CPUs are cheap so it doesn't matter if they melt or burn out whilst testing.

The main thing I am going to focus on is the maximum clock speed, I won't be gaming on this setup, just have it as a hobby.

I am planning on running Phase change cooling to see what I can get out of it.

Under phase, I'd be quite interested to see what a Sandybridge could do, especially with that unlocked multiplier.
Good luck with the record setting though.

I don't think I can get a record setting, im going for a clock setting that is impressive using a cooling system that doesn't disappear after half an hour like liquid nitrogen!

Its just a bit of a fun project to see what can be done really, it will be all go and no show, so if it works then thats what gets fitted.

I might need some help with Intel CPUs as im an AMD guy myself, but the Celerons/Pentiums are cheaper to experiment with.

I used to overclock back in the day, back when watercooling just came out lol

Are the Celerons unlocked as standard?

Right, first cheap bits have arrived, socket 478 mobo and P4, its a 2.0GHz chip it seems with the code of SL5TL so I believe the multiplier is x20, which isn't too bad

The motherboard is an ECS L4S5M mobo, specs are here:

http://www.firingsquad.com/hw/1819/ECS_L4S5M/DX+_V3.02/

Here are a few starting photos to begin with, I will be changing the fan, its actually a 965BE OEM fan which has a 4 pin socket, the fan headers on this mobo have 3, and then a capacitor right next to it so I can't fit it lol the mobo came without a heatsink, thats an old P4 heatsink that I am currently using the fan for on my X4 with great effect

Oh and a Nvidia Geforce FX5200 GFX card for that old school touch

Current project spend: £12

Subbed. I'm thinking of doing this to my Wife's PC, after I get the upgraded parts for it.

The biggest spend on this project will be the cooler, as thats about £400+ but its got a universal fitment for all CPUs, so it could fit on my X4...NO I MUSTN'T hehe

I was also given a MSI cube (thats currently being used for folding) which has a Precott 3 GHz chip, but I think its only got a 15x multiplier, really don't know why Intel have locked the multipliers lol

I will start on the 478s and see what I can do, I can pick up 478 Celerons for about £1 each, which will be fun

I will probably move onto 775s at some point, or indeed get parts of 775s as well although 775 CPUs are more expensive at the moment.

Here are the goals of the project:

Cheap
Fun
6GHz + (to be allowed in the club)
Run for 24 hours straight (unlike LN2 rigs)

my motto is 'all go and no show' so don't expect a prize winning case mod with everything all braided and polished lol

I have recently aquired 5 spare rigs with 478 mobos and CPUs in them, they are all HP, but that just means I have spare CPUs, cases, drives etc etc to nab lol

Here is the stock pile:

I just thought I would try this, I used 2 stacked mobo threaded raisers (that screw into the OEM heatsinks) so space the board off the case, nothing is touching metal, here is my inside out system:

Mobo is outside the case for MAX air flow lol, PSU and everything else is inside the case
