Do you know what kind of game "mods" these people were using?

I've been using mods ever since I first got my Steam account back in 2003 and never had a problem using them.

Regardless, I still don't buy it. Stores have policies. If you're in an area with a Best Buy, Gamestop or any other major retailer that isn't a mom-and-pop shop, they have to honor their policies. A manager at the local Best Buy can't decide to be a maverick and refuse all returns. Franchising works because of consistency.

Either way, the second half of my comment applies. Steam is by far the most flexible and value-added form of DRM currently in existence. It's only going to get more restrictive from here. If you aren't cool with Steam's DRM, have fun console gaming.
well there is no bestbuy but there are some gamestops near where i live but the PC section is just sad so it doesnt even really count, only good for pre-orders. the only store worth going to is a local shop and they have a no return policy.

moving on... it seems its split. half like steam and the other half dont care for it with retail games. i know alot of you are saying just deal with it but for people like me just dealing with it means moving on to consoles or just not gaming. i will never purchase a game retail that requires steam.... hell, thats just asking me to go buy it for xbox.

I have no issue with Steam. It works and the sales are crazy, thats more than enough for me to chose DD over retail. The PC sections in my local retail shops are small compared to wealth of console games they have on offer. If I buy a disc game, I buy it from an online shop, otherwise I get it from Steam.

I dislike Steam an awful lot. I've refused to buy Civ 5 because of it. I only buy a game on Steam if it's such a fantastic deal I'll live with Steam. I don't like the DRM and I don't like what it's doing to the PC game market. At the current rate, in 5 years Steam will be the only way to buy PC games. With DRM of course. I don't like monopolies, and Steam is already pretty much one. Developers feel forced to release their game on Steam or lose huge sales. Steamworks becomes more and more necessary to include on any one app.

I buy games from Impulse, Gamersgate, and Direct2Drive as much as possible. Even if it costs a bit more. Digital distribution is the future. Digital distribution dominated by one company should NOT be the future, but it currently is.

Note: I also don't like being forced to have a 3rd-party DRM application installed that connects to the internet to play a game I own.

Steam fanboys will tell you they have no problem paying 200+ USD for a game, because it's got the Steam seal of lolapproval on it, or having to pay rent per hour played after they've bought the game. That's the future if Valve (and anyone else for that matter) have it their way.

Steam is no exception. It gives great sales it's practically giving away the games, it actually backs up your files and settings in the cloud, and can give you a copy of the game for you to burn to a disc for safekeeping. Very organized with the library and updates too.

Valve games are worthless too. None of them are any fun.

Then just don't buy the games that require it. I mean, sure, there are a few toppers in there, but really, they don't have a lot bound to Steam. Biggest you'll miss out on is the Orange Box and other Valve stuff. If those few games make you switch to consoles, well boo freaking hoo.

No, it's not. And honestly, that's just a gross generalisation. If you really think this, you're an idiot. There's merely a small fraction of the people who use Steam who are like that. Honestly, if there's more than a ten bucks difference in the price, I'm going for retail versions. It's nice to have my games updated and kept in one place, but not worth spending double to money on them. And really, hardly anyone does this.

Not sure if serious...

Half-Life series is generally praised by the PC crowd, while TF2 and L4D are played and enjoyed by many in the community as great multiplayer games. Plus, they have Garry's Mod, Killing Floor, and still supporting the venerable Counterstrike games.

plus i dont think its really a minority. all the local gamers i know tolerate steam but dont love it, they look at it as a lesser of 2 evils sort of thing. now everyone loves the sales but the point of this thread is games that are steam only even when purchased from another place.
