a got a gift, I DID NOT PURCHASE IT, it was a steam only game, i cant return it. see the problem i have now? sure, i could just deal with it being a steam game but since i dont like that i refuse to use it and i now refuse to buy anymore games the company puts out so long as they use steam.
Protip: They don't shrink-wrap most software packages anymore. The ones they do (BFBC2 is an example) also have multiple seals (one on each side of the case that can be opened) that have tamper-proof technology meaning once the sticker is taken off, it's almost impossible to reapply it without visible alteration/damage. Regardless, I still don't buy it. Stores have policies. If you're in an area with a Best Buy, Gamestop or any other major retailer that isn't a mom-and-pop shop, they have to honor their policies. A manager at the local Best Buy can't decide to be a maverick and refuse all returns. Franchising works because of consistency.

Either way, the second half of my comment applies. Steam is by far the most flexible and value-added form of DRM currently in existence. It's only going to get more restrictive from here. If you aren't cool with Steam's DRM, have fun console gaming.

The difference is that the longer you keep that game, then longer it is before you can get another one in that rental slot (assuming use of Gamefly). Time is money, so you're essentially paying for it while your friend plays it. If you mean same-screen coop, that's obviously an exception. That's how the game was designed to be played.

None of the above is true with PC games as a whole.

I like steam a lot BUT, I know people who have had their accounts banned for using game mods etc they didn't even know were banned...

No warning, just banned and all the games on the account gone too...

I think steam need to allow people to reclaim their games after a ban, hell I heard about one guy getting banned because paypal reversed a payment by mistake with nothing to do with him.

Of course I've never been banned, so others could just by lying about the circumstances of their ban...

You might, I won't. I don't care what kind of DRM the game uses, DRM is an invasion of my purchase and I do not accept it. My rant has as much to do with Steam as it does with GFWL and activation limits, I hate all. Now if Steam used a system in which you could download the ISO, and not have anything to do with Steam beyond that, I might be inclined to use it, but until then I'll keep refusing to use Steam.

If having had to use Steam after playing HL2 and CS (I hate CS) means I have no idea what I'm talking about then so be it.

I love physical CD's and i do not trust big corporations. Including steam.

Except it has been said that if Steam does ever go broke - unlikely - that they have a way of removing the DRM of having to validate with their servers.

Steam is owned by Valve, one of the best game developers which actually listens to its fanbase. It gives great support on its games and services, focusing on polishing its titles with updates, fixes and even caters requests. Come on, TF2, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead are awesome games.

Steam is no exception. It gives great sales it's practically giving away the games, it actually backs up your files and settings in the cloud, and can give you a copy of the game for you to burn to a disc for safekeeping. Very organized with the library and updates too.
