What is your receiver. I have my D2X going through my Yamaha HTR 5540 and it does great. You might just need something like a DX or DS to clear things up a bit.

Its a all in one system, probaly wrote that bad. Its just a panasonic 5.1 all in one set, but i mean i thought i would have expected more, especially just powering headphones, but just sounds bad.

Well, if its that bad, then I would get the Essence. Later you can ditch/sell the 5.1 system and get some good speakers. A lot of the receivers that come with those HTB (home theater in a box) systems dont have a separate headphone DAC or amp. Everything is just shared, and like everything else that gets shared, it usually ends up sloppy. LOL.

Does the essence have an optical out?

i would say a new source would be the best rout to take. getting an amp would only amplify the crappy sound your are getting from the on board. as of lately i have been eying the Auzen X-Fi Bravura 7.1. it has some good reviews and ability to change all the opamp's. it $130 new but a good sound card can last for years and multiple builds. they have refurbished units for $90 but they are back ordered.

EDIT: i just saw you in the UK.

Yes, the Essence has an optical out, and it has changeable op amps as well. The Bravura is ok.
