WD Raptor X 150GB ( W/ The Window)

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about picking up a used one for $45 shipped. It still has 2 years of warranty and comes with the original box.

My first question is how much faster will this be than regular 7200 RPM Drives such as the WD Caviar Black or Samsung F3? 150 GB is plenty enough size for me, speed is what I'm looking for. I can't afford a decent sized SSD right now so I need a fast HDD to get me by.

My other question is what is the difference between the Raptor X and VelociRaptor?

Thanks!

1. According to the reviews I've read, a Spinpoint F4 (320GB) is faster, even faster than a Velociraptor at times.

2. The Raptor is the earlier version of the Velociraptor. They are not very fast at this point. The Raptor X is simply a black Raptor with a window.

A sexy window. Lol but yeah it's not that much faster. I know F3s that can keep up with the X. All aesthetics if you ask me--and for $45 its not too bad especially if it still has a warranty.

So, what type of numbers are we talking here? I can't really find any decent benchmarks on the Raptor X 150GB. I actually had a Spinpoint F4 320GB in my last system and it wasn't really that impressive. I know I can't expect SSD-like performance, but I was hoping for better. The Raptor really isn't faster than the F4?

Here are the Specs:

From the looks of it, the Raptor cuts the F4's seek time and latency almost in half.

Raptor X

Interface
SATA 1.5Gb/s

Capacity
150GB

RPM
10000 RPM

Cache
16MB

Average Seek Time
4.6ms

Average Write Time
5.2ms

Average Latency
2.99ms

Spinpoint F4

Interface
SATA 3.0Gb/s

Capacity
320GB

RPM
7200 RPM

Cache
16MB

Average Seek Time
8.9ms

Average Latency
4.17ms

EDIT: I'm not worried about the noise. I always have my tv on and I will be running 8-9 case fans in my Rig, so I'm sure the hard drive will be far from the loudest thing in here.

You could always short stroke an F3/F4 to lower the seek times.
I would always be hesitant about buying a 2nd hand drive even if it does come with a warranty.

So, would running two F4's in RAID 0 be a better idea? I can get two for around $80 for 640GB total. They are the fastest 7200 RPM drives out right now, aren't they?

Also, how do you "short stroke" an HDD? lol

You just make a partition that is like 40gb's or whatever. I didnt notice a damn thing when I did it...

How about an SSD

I would LOVE to have an SSD. lol Unfortunately, I just don't think it's in the budget at the moment. I could get a small one, but I wouldn't have an HDD at all. 30-40 GB SSD doesn't go far. ^_^ I will have to wait on that one until later.

Will 2x F4 320GB's in RAID 0 be my best bet for now? And is it even worth it to use them in RAID?
