What program to use to burn .AVI files to a playable DVD?

Basically I never burn DVDs so I dunno what to do. I have some .AVI video files that I want to burn to DVDs that will be playable in any standard DVD player. I'm guessing I have to convert the files to a different format but I'm not sure what to do. What format do they need to be? What program should I use to burn the DVD?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section and if these are dumb questions. smile.gif Many thanks.

I've been using DVDFlick to burn my movies onto a DVD. So far so good. It converts it and burns it in one big process. Takes me about an hour or so to complete.

EDIT: Takes me about an hour on my laptop. So I'm guessing it will be faster on a more powerful rig. And I only remember throwing AVIs into it. I may have thrown an MP4 or Mpeg in, but all I know is that all my DVDs work perfectly.

Can't seem to get it to work. It encodes everything fine but I can't actually get it to burn the DVD. This other thing called "ImgBurn" pops up but keeps saying medium is not ready. I dunno whats going on with it.
