AMD OR i5-2600k

Thread Starter
Noob here . Heard this was a good source for info.I'm fixing to build a new rig in a couple of weeks. I had a plan of a AMD cpu at first, but after the sandy bridge came out I got confused on what I want now. Seen some videos and read a few post about the sandy bridge.

The main thing I do with my computer is game. Games like BBC2 and FSX.

I will do a mild overclock.

So whats the best bang for the buck? The AMD or sandy bridge.
Maybe even sugest the cpu I would need and MB.
2,4 or 6 cores.

I have owned both makes of cpus, just been a long time since I had a AMD. I currebtly have a i7-975. But can't afford another one.

Thanks

Why buy a new system if you already have an i7 975? Do you actually NEED another computer?

What's your budget? Are you going to crossfire or SLI or both?

If you're on a budget and just need a computer, an AMD Phenom II X4 955 is just fine for gaming, don't let anyone fool you.

This would be a good combo. But of course I need to know your budget.

You might be better off waiting till April when Bulldozer is released if you can wait that long. At least with Bulldozer you can bring your AM3 CPU over to the AM3+ socket when it comes out, but you cannot use AM3+ on an AM3 motherboard.

Any AMD CPU will be a downgrade from what you have now in sheer performance.

What games are you playing?

Neither, get the 2500k for gaming. 4.8-5Ghz over clocks, less than 130watts when over clocked, out performs every AMD chip at stock clocks and over clocks.

/the decision just got easier

Here:

CPU: 2500K
MB: ASUS P8P67 (Gives you UEFI BIOS)
RAM: Choose from any of these low voltage RAM kits

Edit: I just that you have 975... You don't really need a new rig... If you do, I would get the 2500K as its still an upgrade from the 975

Thanks for all the great help. I'm going to build my first pc. Its for my wife. But since I play hard core games, she said to build me one that might be better. The i7-975 is in a alien ware pc. Its stong but its just not upgradable. My budget is around $1200. But I don't need ram. I have a 5850 but don't like the ATI drivers,so I thought about a Nvidea gpu. The other question is I read that the sandy bridge has a gpu?

SLI or crossfire maybe but most likley later.

It does have onboard graphics but if you want to use it, you need a H67 board which has no overclocking, but if you get a P67 board you can overclock but no onboard graphics. I'd suggest you just get a P67 and forget about the onboard graphics.

If you only use your computer for gaming just upgrade the video card in that Alienware.

Edit: Or buy a new motherboard and place that Core i7 975 in it along with a new GTX 570 or 580 or 2 GTX 460s

Yes sandy bridge has an integrated gpu inside a die. If your wife was playing any hardcore games it is strongly advised to upgrade a graphic card. Probably a Nvidia GTX570 card since you prefer Nvidia.

On the other hand, if your wife will not play games, sandy bridge gpu will do more than enough like web browsing, light gaming and HD video. It will consume less power and heat unlike with GTX570 option.

Thanks for the reply. I surf the alienware forums all the time. There has been much talk about upgrading the MB on a alienware. From the very few who have upgraded there MB, many problems arise. The board that controls lights and thermals has not worked out to well. That board controls command center. Its also been thrown around that the fans are perprotary. To make a long story short its a pain in the a$$ to upgrade.

I thought about dual gpus. This thing is not very eficent at cooling. I had to mod the case cooling to bring down some rediculas temps.

I thought about building a new pc and useing the 975 in it. But from what build cost I have done, it is not cost efective.

You must have read my mind on the dual 460s. One of my plans is to build a "upgradable " pc and start with 1 460 and add one later.
