Yea mine does the same, when i play a game that isnt installed.

When i run it off the hard drive its dead quite.

You can try buying a 16 gig flash drive from newegg.

Or do what i did and get a used 60 gig hard drive from amazon, which i got for like 30 bucks and put it in the xbox slim.

The hard drives are in the old 360 case, you have to open it and remove the actualy hard drive from the cover and slide it in the xbox slim.

Very easy and cheap and took me like 10 mins.

here is a simple guide

But back to the original question, as far as I know, its normal.
I have my 360 standing up btw.

I've never really herd the Xbox 360 fat, but my Slim is whisper quiet.

If you can, you really should install your games onto the HDD of the Xbox itself. Not only does it increase load times in many games, it also makes your Xbox run quite a bit quieter and saves some usage on your DVD drive.

like the sound of the console is awesome and i don't hear the HUM like my old 360 just that laser moving back and fourth is sort of loud... the load times seem normal... if the laser was defective I would get read errors correct?

im asking now because I have 3 days to return if defective... I plan on getting a HDD in the future but I just want to know if I should keep this Slim
