Am I dumb for purchasing the 955 BE? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Alright. Thanks for the info guys. I know the 955 has been out for about 2 years, and that made me a bit uncomfortable. If I had the money, I would also be very addicted to new hardware! It took me 6 years to get the setup I have in my sig. I ran an Athlon 64 3500+ until a few weeks ago, and I hated it at the end. This 955 is like going from a Pentium 2 to a Pentium 4 HT back in the day. I started to feel bad because of all of the Bulldozer thread popping up, but I'll be ok, lol. Thanks for the replies everyone!

In my opinion the Phenom II 955/965 are still great value for money for $150-$160. SB is more powerful but costs more unless you're one of the lucky ones who got a Microcentre i5-2500k for $180. Not an option for everyone. I think that's about the best value chip I've ever seen.

Going Intel kinda feels like selling out, glad i picked AMD. Not overly delighted with my choice as it is starting to show it's age a little, but software is having a hard time keeping up with hardware it seems so i should be set for the time being.

Will be looking closely at Bulldozer when it comes out though, hope it's worth the wait.

I bough my friend a 955 and got myself a 1055t.

No difference at all, besides me having keeping everything opened.

The 2 extra cores or nice (I do convert movies for my iPhone 4 so I can watch them in the bus because it takes about 1h30 to get to school). I have media converter opened 24/7 and like 25 tabs of google chrome (4chan /b/rothers!), World of Warcraft at the auction house, Starcraft II waiting for kids, music and normal stuff like some word documents and all that jazz. Multi-tasking here I am. I wanted to try an i7 since I do alot of multitasking but I decided to wait third gen (IB) and Bulldozer before I jump ship.

TL;DR; 955 is awesome, unless you encode and do LOTS of multitasking like me. That's why I got a 6 core and 8 GB ram.

you could overclock the backside off it and make it punch much higher than its weight!
that always makes you feel better

Not dumb at all.

Its a great chip especially for its price/performance. Mainstream (non-power user) software hasn't caught up to utilizing full hardware on newer machines. So you should be gravy train for a while.

I bought mine in March of last year and still extremely happy with my setup. I thought about getting a Thuban but there was no need. It would only satiate my desire for mo' powah. I need more ram, but everyone says that.

I may get a bulldozer a year after its been out, after seeing how it has developed. Turn this rig into a HTPC/Gaming Machine.

The bad thing about owning a 955 is you likely won't NEED to upgrade to Bulldozer!
