[AS] T-Mobile internals confirm Samsung is holding the Android world Hostage

We recently received a tip from someone we feel is a reliable source. The information in the tip has just confirmed everything we have ever thought about Samsung, OTA’s and new devices.

Our source has confirmed that there is already a fully functioning 2.2 OTA update ready to be pushed out by T-Mobile but Samsung has told them NOT to release the update for fear of it decreasing the value of the newly announced Vibrant 4G+. Further information has revealed that not only is the Samsung Vibrant 4G nothing more then a Vibrant with a front facing camera (FFC), but the software update would also enable the same 4G speeds that we are already capable of. The only thing missing at this point is a nice little 4G icon on your screen, which is in the update as well. This is questionable as the hardware needs to support HSDPA+ for this to work, but you never know.
Source.
sorry about the wrong section (i reported it already)

I knew something like this was going to happen...
Ever since the first phone with Hpdsa+ came out for tmobile, I knew samsung wont sit still. But to delay the Vibrant OTA 2.2 because of the 4g version is just scheming.
I am already on a 2.2 Vibrant with Nero4.1 but just imagining a better build built on the official 2.2 rom already sounds so awesome.

I senses there was some sort of conspiracy going on with Android updates. It's not just Samsung, I seriously believe every phone manufacturer is in on it.

My Captivate is my last Samsung. They have their customers pissed with the lack of Froyo and broken promises of people getting it and now this?! I believe it 100%. Luckily I don't have to deal with them thanks to the geniuses at XDA. I'm sure plenty of people feel the same way I do also. Samsung is really screwing up..

Google needs to hold these Manufacturers more accountable. It's Google's fault there's so much fragmentation on the android platform. Phones that could easily run 2.2 still stuck on 1.6... Total BS.

Google needs to make them agree to provide updates within two weeks of the AOSP being available, otherwise fragmentation is still going to hinder the platform.

Wait.. Do you guys not have UNofficial 2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs floating around?

I don't know, if whatever the source is saying true, i.e. 2.1 --> 2.2 will enable 4G on existing Vibrant, shouldn't the UNofficial 2.2/2.2.1 update also enable this as well?

I find it hard to believe that old Vibrants (i.e. non-4G) already have a built-in 4G modem??? And no one knew about it until an insider at T-Mobile "disclosed" this information?

The OP source also indicates this at the last sentence that the HARDWARE would also have to support it...

I also question the fact that a manufacturer like Samsung would be "predicating" its own product and state that the new 4G enabled Vibrant will deprecite the old Vibrant in value... That almost makes NO sense from a Hardware manufacturer's point of view. I see it more like T-Mobile trying to sell the non-4G and the 4G hardware at two diffferent price points, and that the supposed 2.2 update will make them harder to sell and contract the non-4G version...

Reading the article the second time forces me to assume that whoever this "insider" is has almost no knowledge with respect to the hardware as well as the software aspect of things... The source mentions at the end that the 2.2 update will make ALL phones run faster (i.e. better RFS file-system, optimization, etc) and makes the Vibrant go a LITTLE FASTER??? What the hell is this? We need a quantitative observation and/or reasoning, especially if it's coming from an INSIDER.

I call BS on this whole thing.

It certainly is. Google has let too many crappy Android phones come out. They need to start requiring approval of what Android devices manufacturers are allowed to sell. Samsung produces a sample > passes it to Google > Google approves/denies distribution according to its performance. Weak phones only make your OS look weak. In defense of Google, though, it had to be that way to get Android where it is now. Cheaper phones hit that audience that can't afford/doesn't want to pay the price of such a high end smartphone. Hopefully Google will start having SOME control of the manufacturers decisions in hardware and software updates.

For the record, the Nexus S is an amazing phone, especially with its hardware acceleration. I'd kill to get my hands on one.

I don't see how that's Google's fault. They aren't the ones that tell manufacturers whether or not to roll it out for their phone.

People keep talking about fragmentation as a problem, but is it really? It's much ado about nothing. The only people that are going to care whether their phone will have the next OTA update are people who actually know things about electronics. The average person sees multiple options for phones and buys whatever is in their budget. Anyone who cares about OTA updates can do their research and pick the phone that will probably get them, thereby eliminating the problem. You get what you pay for.
