On September 7th, Samsung has announced their latest system-on-chip (SoC) for smartphones. Code named 'Orion', this is the successor to the successful (and powerful) Hummingbird SoC. As it was the case with Hummingbird, Samsung continues to use 45nm manufacturing technology. This time around, two Cortex A9 cores have been implemented, each running at 1GHz. Hummingbird uses a single Cortex A8 core.

I always thought that the tegra 2 would have the best mobile gpu, turns out it has the worst

One thing to keep in mind is that the Tegra 2 is in production and available now. The Samsung processor this article is about MIGHT be available in Q3 2011. Not really a fair comparison...

Of course the unreleased future processor will be better.

This is like saying "Bulldozer may be as fast as Core i7!"

Where are the benchmarks?

Edit: And that post was made "Posted 23 September 2010 - 12:37 PM"

It's not exactly NEWs is it? Tegra 2 didnt even have actual benchmarks then!

So is x86 really so inefficient that ARM has gained a foothold in mobile devices? It makes you wonder what would happen if ARM could be extrapolated to the high-end desktop segment.

They're working on it already - quad-core ARM chips for servers

Tegra 2's CPU core will be competitive but its GPU appears to be weaker than even PowerVR SGX540. Heck, even Qualcomm's Adreno 205 may outperform this GPU.
Epic fail by Nvidia? Maker of the world's most powerful GPU has the worst GPU performance in Tegra2?!

actually, anandtech did a bench on the Tegra 2, its GPU performance is 10-30% faster then a SGX 540, and demolishes the adreno 205. The qualcomm 205 just sucks compared to todays GPU in the smarthphones. 205s were in the Nexus one and the Droids.

I have been following the Orion chip for a while since Samsung announced they will be using it last year. The CPU is the same ARM developed chip, the GPU is just a beastly piece of silicon. It is scalable with cores up to 4, and supposedly a single core is 5 times faster then the SGX540. Its orion is build with the Cortexa9 cpu and the Mali - 400mp GPU which is also developed by ARM. The cortex a9 uses less power then the A8 in the galaxy S despite being dual core, the Orion gpu also uses little power, combine them together and you get a pretty hardcore package.
