Disagree. Granted that it had a big screen and near PS2-quality graphics; but the UMD format was FAIL, the short battery life was FAIL, and the form factor/size was FAIL (too big to be "portable"...it it don't fit in your pocket, it ain't portable).

Best portable of all time was the GBA SP. Tiny form factor, ridiculous durability, and a massive game library with titles to suit gamers of all skills and ages.

Well that may be, but that's not the point. The question is whether the technology in the PS3 is so "old hat" that it can be shrunk down to the size of a PSP. And I would argue "No", it cannot, for two reasons: 1) We would have phones that powerful already, if it were feasable at the price point we're talking about; and 2) Sony would have already released a PS3 Super-Slim (or whatever), because getting the PS3 hardware into a smaller form factor saves them money/increases profit on every unit sold.

Essentially, we do. Some of these dual-core phones are pretty damned powerful. Also the PSP2 doesn't actually need to be as powerful as a ps3, merely output the same quality content @ whatever res the screen is. Tegra 2 looks plausible.

Also, they have to keep architecture the same and just shrink it for slimming the PS3. They don't have to use the same architecture in the psp2, thus opening up a huge range of hardware options.

Doable? Why not?
They can do nice things these days with ultra low power devices and handheld consoles doesn't seem to fit in that category with their power needs.

PS3 is half a decade old and all but high tech.
The original PSP did the same thing to PS2.
This.

It appears as if the majority of the people who have posted has no idea what the latest technology is capable of. Once again, another ironic feat from OCN considering the massive amount of "low tech" garbage they spit at consoles.

Hmm. I'd have to see a Tegra 2 phone in action, but based on what I have seen I don't know about this. I mean, Tiger Woods and Need for Speed on my iPhone are very, very impressive looking games...but I don't know that I would call them PS3 or X360 calibre. Maybe it's just hard to properly judge, since it's subjective and the screen size is so different.

But also, remember that a smartphone actually costs (typically) $600, not the $200 subsidized price that AT&T or Verizon charges you. A $300 unsubsidized phone is more like an iPhone 3G or, at best, a 3GS...I can't believe that would compare favorably to a PS3.

Lol what a joke. Even at a lower res and NM still would need to be plugged in. I am excited for the PSP 2 though.

Then again why would Sony lie.

UMD was awesome. Why was it fail? Do you know how amazing it was to watch DVD quality movies on a trip with you back then? The quality of games on UMD was also much great, look at Crisis Core... nothing even comes close to that quality.

I took mine in my pocket literally everywhere, so you are wrong again on that. I've had PSP's in my pockets for like 8 years lol. I've owned 4-5 PSP's too, some just because they were imports, some because of extra features, and some to play Tekken DR on with a PS2 controller and TV ( back in 1000 days ).

GBA SP was a great GB, and if you like that style of games its easily one of the best, but there are games on PSP that are indentical to console quality length, graphics, sound, soundtracks ect that would be impossible on on SP. The extra buttons and analog nub also made more controls available. I had pretty much every portable system since GB original and PSP smokes all of them, not mention if you get into modding you can play all those games on your PSP, with a bigger screen and better controls.

So I can't say that's even close to being true, even if I am biased on paper the PSP is the best handled of all time. The only one that I had as much fun with was original GB, because at the time it was like the PSP in those days.

Some of my PSP's:

For bonus I'll even show you my game.com.... I told you I've owned everything almost haha.

Well saying that it can produce visuals comparable to almost 10 year old hardware isn't saying much.

I have gone through this before, the Cell processor is not a powerful chip. It is overhyped as a "supercomputer" processor.

The only thing it is fast at is Single precision floating point performance. The Cell BE is capable of a peak 21.03GFLOPS DP floating-point, and a peak of 230.4GFLOPS SP floating point. (In the real world it is much less, due to inefficiency and the fact that the PS3 does not have a fully functional Cell, one SPU is disabled and one is reserved for the OS)

There is a reason that IBM compares it to a Pentium 4 in their documents.
