Looking for a New Surround System for TV

Thread Starter

The system I currently have is a Sony 5.1 HTIB that is from 2001 with no hdmi hookups plus it is constantly going into "protect" mode. So with tax season approaching I am hoping to talk the wife into using some of the money for a new surround system.

Hook Ups would be:
Samsung HDTV
Samsung Blu-ray
Wii
HD Cable Box

I want to be able to run hdmi cables from the cable box and blu-ray player to the receiver and then one hdmi cable up to the tv. The Wii is still just standard composite cables.

Budget would be something like $400 max.

I was looking into the Onkyo 5.1 HTIB system. But from what I read it is just a repeater. Does this mean I would have to run seperate audio cables as well as the hdmi cable?

OR

I also have now seen this speaker package from parts express:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-696

All I would need is a receiver. Is there a decent one out there for about $200 shipped max that would run these?

HDMI repeater means it has active circuitry to extract sound from the signal. HDMI pass-through is just a simple switch.

Well, I have done some searching around and I am looking at a couple receivers for the Dayton Speaker and sub setup

What I want to be able to do is plug up the Blu-Ray Player and cable box via HDMI and have video and audio run through the cable. Will all of these do this and what is the best deal out of these? I am open to other suggestions within the price ranges here. I would not be able to go higher in price then the $325 AVR1600.

Harmon Kardon AVR1600
$303.38 + $19.99 shipping on Amazon

Harmon Kardon AVR254
~$225 on Harmon's ebay store

Onkyo TX-SR308
$199.99 Free Shipping on Amazon

Onkyo TX-SR508
$229.00 From Amazon

From what i remember on the avr1600, it can only cross input from component to hdmi, the avr 2600/3600 can do it for all inputs. So this means for the avr1600 you'd have to get component cables for the Wii. I think the avr254 also scales all inputs to hdmi for output, and also has preouts for adding another amp down the road.
I know there were some HDMI issues from the avr254 to the PS3, but i *think* they resolved that with a firmware update.

Downside: avr254 is a couples years old, the hdmi chipset is 1.3a, where the 1600 and sr508 is 1.4a (if you care about 3d-tv).

I cant comment too much on the onkyo, but i if all you want to do is hookup a receiver and off you go, then i would rate the receivers in the following order from the specs i just read.

HK254
sr508
avr1600
sr308

I personally own the HK avr2600 and the only compliant i have is the hdmi handshake delay when the source changes - alot of hdmi compliant receivers have this issue, b/c the standard is to reestablish the communication for hdcp reasons.

Remember reading reviews and owner threads online is your friend in this case

good luck!

I ended up getting a HTIB (Onkyo HT-S5300) instead. The WAF was not enough for the separates. I got the HT-S5300 for $299.99 from http://www.accessories4less.com/index.phpso there really was not anything that could beat it at that price. Heck the receiver is worth that alone. I also grabbed the cables from http://www.monoprice.com/home/index.asp if you all have not heard of them, never buy a cable until you check their prices!
