any HTPC guru's out there? ---> htpc case suggestion for my room (pic)

Thread Starter
here's a pic of the HTPC setup:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...0/IMG_1646.jpg

I already have the hardware decided on except for the case.

AMD x2/x4, 4gb ddr3, 2tb caviar green, ati 5450, usb3.0, Windows7 64bit ultimate
The motherboard will most likely be microATX, something w/ toslink/digital coax.
TV is an Infocus Screenplay 61" DLP.

You may be thinking, why not just use the HDMI out for audio ? My Pioneer receiver does not have HDMI, so i will be routing the video card directly to the TV for video only, and it'll either be optical or digital coax for 5.1/7.1 thru my receiver/Energy speakers.

The system will be set atop or inside a home theater pc shelf, so size isnt really an issue. I just prefer a horizontal enclosure (one that lies down instead of standing upright like a standard pc tower)

The Silverstone ML03 is sweet, but at $60+ it's kinda pricey or am i just a cheapskate?

My other option is to get the Cooler Master Elite 360.
Amazon has it for $39 free shipping no tax, or $50 w/ PSU.

$39 w/o psu

$50 w/ 350w psu.

Has anyone used this case or seen it in stores?
I tried using the forum search but it keeps coming back 'maintenance' with a blank page.
Any advice/suggestion/tips regarding this CM 360 or any other case, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Dude, your left speaker is firing into the sofa, that will absorb loads of the sound!

Onto cases, I myself use the Elite and I purchased a matching coolermaster modular power supply which combined offers a very silent system. The case isnt that bad, the build quality is pretty sturdy and I managed to even route some cables behind the motherboard tray. Theres a place to add a hardrive down the side of the case, and I found this created a lot of noise and vibration, so bare this in mind. You could always use some brackets and mount it into one of the optical drive bays, or use an SSD. So you can see from what I'm saying that you will only have space for 2 full size drives at the most. Oh and I actually had to pry the metal apart to fit the drive into the side ways drive slot, because it was so tight!
Personally, I don't see the need for what I have. I placed my old quad system into one of these cases , and the most it ever does is play a blu-ray movie. I'm planning on getting rid of that system, and getting an all in one mini itx board probably by Zotac or Asus. I'll combine that with a mini itx case I've seen that's like £30 and throw in a 2TB drive for movies and music and just loop the HDMI through my amp. This will only draw 20watts at load and be silent, compared to 150watts and 5 fans!

Oh and theres only 10cm clearance for graphics cards

Dont put a PSU that comes with a case in a computer with a graphics card of any kind.

also keep in mind, if your not using HDMI to a receiver, your only going to be able to do 5.1/7.1 with AC3(aka dolby digital) or DTS passthrough... max PCM channels on toslink/coax is 2ch.

So is your max budget $50?

This one costs $99 on newegg, but it's very very quiet.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...RANDIA%20GD04B

The construction is nice, and I was very surprised how quiet it was, even the first time I turned it on with the case still open. So if noise is an issue at all, that case is very nice but it's a bit pricey.

It's actually not that bad, the bottom 1/3rd of the left/right speaker is all wood veneer.

I'll be using atleast an Antec earthwatts 380w or better. I've always had good luck w/ powersupplies, never had a bad one really, except for this one Thermaltake TRW-2 something 500w w/ a weird sleep/hibernate switch in the back... will never buy a thermaltake psu again.

It's just hard for me to justify spending $99 on a case, when i just picked up a mobo, amd x4, and 4gb ram --- all for close to $100 in the 'for sale' section.

The most expensive case i ever bought was my CoolerMaster HAF 932, and it was $59 after rebate and came with a free thermaltake Frio cpu cooler. I flipped the cooler on eB*y for $40, so... you catch my drift.

Rather put the extra money saved towards a nicer AV receiver.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but for example:

Watching a 1080p 22GB ripped Avatar .mkv file w/ 5.1 audio track,
ati 5450 ---video only via HDMI ---> TV,
motherboard optical or digital coax ----- audio signal ---> pioneer receiver -----> 5.1 Energy speakers

Are you saying the audio will only be 2-channel?
If so, would that be a motherboard/optical/digi coax issue, or something else?
Please elaborate, im a neophyte when it comes to upmix/downmix, pcm, etc

I'm not really concerned with the new sound formats, namely DTS-HD or DolbyDigital-True etc, for now standard 5.1/7.1 channel dd or dts will be fine.
(dts sounds better than DD but that's another discussion)

You will get dts/dd sent to the receiver untouched, the receiver then decodes them. IF your receiver did not decode dts/DD and your pc did then it could only send 2 channel audio.

Simplest answer to the sound is use your hdmi out of the gpu into the tv and use the digital out from the tv to the receiver. This way you get 5.1, through the tv and the stereo. I don't know about your onboard passing dts through the hdmi, but i'm pretty sure Nvidia's gpu's don't.

As for your case, get whatever fits your needs as a case, but make it a pretty htpc case. It will always be staring at you. One last thing, personal opinion. Don't bother with LCD screens on the case. I specifically looked for one with a screeen, now i hate it and find it useless.
