i am not sure if it is always true. Every TV I have encountered that had HDMI then Optical out, only did 2channel pass through. Check your manual.

The best solution for sound is Optical SPDIF to Receiver. Also why Do you mean through TV to Stereo? because you should never have sound coming out of your TV if using an external Receiver Stereo or Surround.

Also cases are cases, but if you have ever had a nice one IE Silverstone or Lian Li then you understand why there are more expensive (and they will spoil you).

yes, my plan is to have the motherboard pass the audio signal via optical to the pioneer receiver which would then decode/process the sound and get 5.1/7.1 channels out.

How do i prevent the onboard audio from only 'sending' 2-channels?

thanks for all the input guys, i love this forum!

1- Yes, we get 5.1 passing throught the tv. Its not true hd.

2- Yes, Optical from a sound card to the receiver is ideal. This will provide truehd and dts. But why should i never have sound coming out of my tv? Sorry, but thats retarded. Why wouldn't i use additional speakers that sound great?
3- Desktop cases, yes, they just cases. HTPC cases are vey different. They can either compliment your living room, or make your room look like it was decorated by the Salvation Army on a Craigslist binge.

I have the Elite 360 and I bought it for a HTPC because it was the smallest case at my local computer store that fit a full sized ATX board. It's not a bad case and the fan that came with it is quiet and moves air. The build quality of the case is great as well but what I don't like about is the limited cable management, which isn't that bad except for the weird placement of my 24 pin on the board. If you are buying a new psu I would suggest a modular but you can live with out it. The case also has these stupid plastic toolless drive holders for the 5.25 and 3.5 drive bays. I managed to destroy a mult icard reader because of these cheap plastic bastards. They are a tight fit and god forbid you have to pull one out. That's how a destroyed the reader. Had to get pliers and rip on it to get it out. Also I don't have a disk drive in the case cause all I do is stream and use a tuner so I don't know what it would be like to have even less space to hid cables for better air flow. Its a narrow case to so you won't have a lot of room for tall aftermarket coolers but I did squeeze a zalman 9500 into by bender the top fins down. It can be positioned horizontally or vertically. The thumb screws on mine where junk which made the sides are hard to get off without a screw driver which defeats the the point of thumb screws. But the there is tons of fan room in this case. 3 80mm (bottom, 2 side by side in the rear) and 2 120mm ( top and side). Over all the case is fine for what I use it for. Its never opened and houses a tv tuner, ATX board, full sized PSU, 2x 5.25 drives but only 2x 3.5 drives. I would suggest it you have all your gear and get an ATX instead of mATX.

1- Most tv's (not all) will only pass DD and not DTS though the optical.

2- Just because you are misinformed does not mean you should pass it out like its fact. S/Pdif does NOT have the bandwidth to pass truehd or dtshd, but it can pass DTS and DD. The second part doesn't make sense to me what you are trying to say, you want tv speakers and home audio speakers at the same time?

3- not sure where you were going here to be honest. I suggest a nicer brand case that looks good to you HTPC or not, whatever you like to look at. I suggest a decent brand b/c they are usually built better (design, fabrication, and materials) and tend to keep sound down a bit.

When you set up windows media center for example it will ask you about your speaker config, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1 .

Sorry for the failed multi quote and double posting.

ok i stand corrected, but about the second part what I was trying to say was what you just said, If running an external receiver then you should disable your tv speakers through the tv menu or turn them all the way down.
