Fraps bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, well I've been trying to record videos with fraps, but I don't want to be limited to 30fps when I'm recording. The one problem is when I set it to 60 fps, my computer can't handle it and only runs around 45 - 50 fps (while playing bad company 2).

If you're too lazy to look in my sig, the significant specs of my rig concerning this issue are:

Core i7 w3520 @4.2 Ghz
ATI HD 5970
2 x Samsung 1tb F3's short stroked to 400 gbs and in raid 0

So my question, is where's my bottleneck? I assume it's my graphics card, and if I added another 5970 in CF it'd fix this issue.

What do you guys think?

You don't really have one.. fraps is a kinda crappy program to be using to record video in bad company 2, but I don't know what other options there are. I tried doing what you're doing with my sig rig, and had the same results.

I say it would be the CPU. Playing BC2 + recording is intense.

Do you know a better program for it then? I'm just trying to use the feature which records the last 30 seconds of what you did, so I can just catch all those amazing moments of my gameplay...

Also, technically there is always a bottleneck .

So possibly 4 drives in raid 0 for recording? or 2 raptors...?

I personally avoid using Fraps anymore, as it's unnecessary to use true lossless.
This is especially true if you're planning on uploading these videos to any of the popular video hosts (almost all of which lossy transcode your video yet again when processsing).

What I've found to be the better alternative (especially in disk space consumption, for me I/O bottlenecks were frequent); is to use something like HyperCam with Divx Pro w/ the enhanced multi-threading option, very fast or fast preset (designed specifically for real-time streaming), the correct HD profile and an appropriately high bitrate setting ~5k-10+ (set on the high side, it will only use what it needs).
H.264 is inherently much more CPU intensive, hence the reason for avoiding it for something like this.

You can achieve perceivably lossless video, much smaller filesizes, and very low CPU use.
I think I average like ~10-15% CPU at 1680x1050 and I/O is not even close to being an issue.

nope, have a drive for storage. set the path for the video to goto it. remmember that when ur playing, the computer is transfering datat already to and from the hd. when u start recording it is sending it to the samd hd, and that is when it starts bottlenecking. i had the same problem, but switch the drive that it puts the movies onto,(storage Drive) and that eliminated the bottleneck.

So it's not a problem with a raid 0 not being fast enough, it's the fact that I'm making my hdd thrash? Do you think a single 1tb drive would be fast enough to work alone if I set it to be the drive I record to?

Definitely like this suggestion. The huge fraps videos gets old very quickly, and of course I don't need full hd like you said. The one problem with a program such as Divx Pro is I simply want to be able to record the last 30 seconds of gameplay at the push of a button instead of a program which records all the time. That's just way too much video to sift through to find those few moments where I kill someone and ask myself how I did that.
