HTPC build spec review

Thread Starter
Ok so I am tired of streaming media off my laptop and constantly filling it up with movies and tv shows so i decided its time to build a media center. I have not built a computer in 6 years and am way out of the loop. what i want out of this HTPC is to be able to play the odd game nothing extreme , stream media , play blue rays and HD content , and have lots of hard drive space to store all my movies , tv shows , pics and music.

My setup

- Panasonic 50 inch plasma
- paradigm 7.1 surround with 12 inch sub
- panasonic blue ray player
- logitech harmony one controller

question

- will the 5700 handle audio and video threw HDMI in 7.1 ?
- is it worth putting in the SSD for my boot drive ?
- can i expand with this motherboard later and add a dual HD tuner and another 2TB Hard Drive ?
- I was going to use windows 7 with XBMC good choice or bad ?

-Gigabyte H55M-USB3 mATX LGA1156 H55 DDR3 1PCI-E16 1PCI-E4 2PCI HDMI Sound GBLAN USB3.0 Motherboard
-Intel Core i3 540 Dual Core Processor Clarkdale LGA1156 3.06GHZ Hyperthreading 4MB Cache Retail Box
-Gigabyte Radeon HD 5770 OC 900MHZ 1Gb 4.8GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI Display Port DX11 PCI-E Video Card
-Patriot Viper Xtreme 4GB 2X2GB DDR3 2000MHZ PC3-16000 9-11-9-27 1.65V Dual Channel Memory Kit
-PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk II 500W SLI Certified ATX Power Supply 80 Plus Silver
-Noctua NF-R8 80MM Ultra Quiet Cooling Fan 800-1800RPM 26-53M3/H 7-17DBA Molex x 4
-Icy Dock MB882-SP-1S-1B 2.5IN SATA HDD/SSD to 3.5IN Hard Drive Converter
-Kingston SSDNow V Series Gen II 128GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive
-Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA2 3GBPS 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM x 2
-LG BH10LS30 Bluray Writer 10X BD-R 16X DVD-RW Lightscribe SATA Retail Box
-D-LINK DWA-552 Xtreme N Desktop Adapter 802.11B/G/N Triple Antenna PCI Adapter
-LIAN-LI PC-65 USB Silver Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case (this is my old gaming case and it was stripped thats why i need a power supply and new fans)

Ok tell me what you think good bad or just start all over.

Do NOT waste your money on intel AND a GPU. Either grab an intel and use the onboard gpu, you will not get 24fps though. OR amd dual core + a gpu. Both will get dts-hd/ and dolby truehd, as I said the intel will have a 24fps issue. Unless $ is no issue

SSD will save you a few seconds a day.

XBMC can not do live TV so you might as well start with windows media center so you dont have to redo everything. MCE + media browser is just like xbmc.

As for that GPU, I would look around and try to find the quietest 5770 around, and the OC edition is pointless.

Jesus Christ that's an overpowered HTPC.

An AMD dual core + a low powered video card + a sound card is all you need. Don't waste your money on a SSD.

Also, that RAM is a definite no-no. Overpriced and not very good at all. You can get the same performance out of an HTPC for a third of the price you're willing to pay.

MCE + media browser sounds like a damn good idea to me i did some reading up on it thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't notice i copy and pasted the link for the oc 5700 how this one sounds instead. I read the it was one of the quietest versions or did i get misinformed

Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 850MHZ 1Gb 4.8GHZ GDDR5 PCI-E 2XDVI HDMI Display Port Lite Video Card V2

and yes i know its a little over kill i forgot to mention that i will be building a new house in a year and will have a theater room and tv in the bedroom and shop that i will want to be connected to this media center or is it still to overkill for that ? and yes i will want to do some gaming nothing major but the odd rainy night.

keep the suggestions coming i am not in a hurry to get this thing build i would rather do it right and not build something to cost me way more then it should of or on the other hand to cheap that i will outgrow in a year.

Thanks for the quick responses

Are you talking about 1 hptc for 3 spaces? B/c that could be an issue. streaming takes pretty much 0 resources besides network usage.

As others have said, what you have is overkill for a HTPC. a lesser dual core & fair HTPC GPU is fine. Depending on your TV, you can likely run audio over HDMI and then split it out from your TV to the amp / speakers.

Something also to think about, 300W is more than enough for many HTPC. You can often get it lower to 150 or so and still be fine. Since many HTPC stay on for longer periods and you're not going to upgrade them as often, think about a smaller PSU.

I know that you're going to reuse a case, but you might be able to find a case with a PSU for less or about what you're going to put into your case. I found an Antec HTPC with a 300W 80+ for $100. Just a thought.

A 5450 GPU is enough. Get what ever there is a sell on.
Rarely do you need an aftermarket cooler unless you're looking for something quieter or thinner (for a case). Again, rare(r) to overclock a HTPC b/c there's less of a reason to.

IMO SSD is a waste for a HTPC. Again, they tend to stay on longer so the whole boot up thing doesn't matter. You only tend to run two or three programs (max 5?). Save a few coins there.

Good luck on the build. Let us know how it goes.

Just for giggles, what games are you talking about? If you are set on the 5770 post in the ati forum here and they may be able to help.

As for power supply none of my HTPC's go over 100watts, I wish I could justify the $100 for a picopsu

I bought an Athlon II X4 640 (3.0 GHz quad-core) and this motherboard for my just-built HTPC. The onboard GPU has handled every home-theatre-related task I've thrown at it (up to blu-ray playing and 1080p MKVs) with nary a hiccup.

Your mobo+CPU are roughly equivalent in cost to mine. But I don't need the 5770, which saves me $130 or so in comparison.

Thats a damn good point on the case i think i might go with the Antec Fusion Remote Black HTPC its cheaper then messing around with my old case to just buy a new one with PSU

I guess i will face the facts this is not a gaming comp and will just use it as an media center my gf laptop is getting old now and she would rather have a desktop pc at home and not another laptop since i have one and having two is useless. Witch is a damn good excuse for me to build another comp later =-)

- so if i scrap the 5770 should i go with a lower end card if so what do you guys suggest ? or just go with the onboard one ?
-if i go with the onboard one will it be able to do video and sound threw one HDMI cable ?
- if i scrap the ssd should i buy another smaller drive to replace it of partition a boot drive from one of my 2tb green drives ?
- changed my ram to this G.SKILL F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO Eco PC3-12800 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL7-8-7-24 1.35V Memory there is a sale on it for the next month at the place i am going to buy all my parts

If you want Dolby True HD and DTS-HD (full blu ray audio) you going to want a 5xxx gpu or use the intel onboard graphics. Some Nvidia 4xx series also support this.

Of course your receiver needs to support it or it doesn't matter. If you use amd onboard graphics you can get sound and video over hdmi but you may be limited to 2.0 sound or possibly 5.1 with regular dolby and dts. Same thing as spdif.

Yes there is an issue that intels graphics can't do 24p. Not sure what panny plasma you have but unless its the high end model, (I think G and above) it won't even matter to you.

Some folks use it and say they don't notice anything.

In my htpc I have an ATi 5450 with an intel celeron E3300. Works great. You don't need much for an htpc. I personally prefer a dedicated card over onboard graphics. Unless we are talking intels graphics on the H55 chipset. They are great (aside from the 24p issue of course.)
