How to reinstall Win7 while preserving software RAID setup?

Thread Starter
Because I was too lazy to figure out how to do it through hardware, I made the mistake of using Disk Management to put my two 1TB drives in RAID 0.

Now here comes that time of the year where I need to reinstall Windows 7, but I want to be sure that I won't lose my RAID setup in doing so. There's about 300GB of data on the drives, so backing it up is not an option (granted, it's not very valuable data, but I rather not lose it if I don't have to).

So here's my question: If I do a clean install of Windows, will it automatically detect that I setup RAID on those drives via Windows & preserve it? Or will I lose my data and have to reconfigure it?

Thank for your time.

I've only ever gone hardware, but--and I can't say for certain--that there is a good chance that windows will detect the software array after you reinstall (assuming that you use the same raid manager program, whatever it was).

But I highly suggest hardware raid in the future.

sorry to bump an old thread.

will this work using the built in windows 7 soft raid 1? i have two 1tb WD black edition drives that i can't mirror with my onboard controller. if i mirror them with windows 7 (purely as data, not as an OS drive) and for whatever reason, have to reinstall the OS, can i just recover the raid configuration without losing data on either drive?

thanks guys
