i5-2300 onboard video performance?

Thread Starter
Hi everybody,

I'm thinking about building a small (HTPC style) rig for my girlfriend. She only has a macbook air as her primary computer. It has been acting up lately and frankly I'm sick of fixing it. It still works, but I think she needs a primary desktop rig. That thing reaches 95C playing youtube videos for more than 3 minutes...

I'm thinking of building a micro atx sandybridge rig. Since she does not need anything high performance whatsoever I was thinking the i5-2300 would be perfect.

Is the onboard graphics capability of the i5-2300 capable of 1080p playback? I think that is probably the most stressful thing this computer will see. I want to know if I can skip a video card entirely and just go with onboard graphics.

I can't seem to find much info about the i5-2300 as everybody is talking about the 2600k. Do they have the same onboard graphics?

It feels funny piecing together a rig with no video card. I've never done that before.

Yes. I seem to remember seeing a review with the CPU running 5 1080p streams at the same time.

No, they don't. The non-K processors have the HD 2000 with only 6 EU's. However, if you're not gaming, it doesn't really matter.

the graphics from the i5-2300 are excellent for more than capable of 1080p playback - but i'd advise you to make sure you have a mobo with HDMI outputs as being stuck with DVI-D and seperate audio jacks will be a pain if you don't intend to get a GPU
