GTX 570 dead

Thread Starter
I did a 16 hour stress test on my GIGABYTE GTX 570 and determined that it was stable @:

1.188v (I edited the BIOS with NiBiTor v6.0 to allow a voltage cap of 1.213 instead of the normal 1.1v)

880MHz core
2300MHz memory

I raised the volts until I could get these clocks stable, while making sure my temps weren't too high.

my max temp was only 76C... so I'm assuming that the transistors wore out or something along those lines. Unless 76C is too high for 570s, which I doubt. Its also possible that the card was faulty to begin with.
I've been hearing that that I shouldn't raise the volts above 1.15v.
so that may have been the problem, even though the temp wasn't too high.
I didn't think a card could burn out from voltage being too high unless the temps were high as a result.

Any input on what happened to my card?

also some advice: from this I'd say not to raise the voltage past 1.15v, and also use your card for a while (about 2 weeks) before you overclock, to make sure it isn't faulty. just get your card stable with as high clocks as you can, not going above 1.15v, until you see some other risk-taker like me go above there and not get burned! wink.gif

err, any sort of adding voltage will decrease the life of the card, but by going above the factory limit it will kill it a lot faster. lol i think 16 hour stress test is over done for a GPU. good enough would be to run furmark for 15 or 30 min, try occt, and do some game testing.

haha but why would volts above 1.15v fry it when the temps weren't high at all?

I dont know man. I can say that I monitor my temps and I see 70c on both cards all the time from gaming with fan speed at 50% so I wouldnt think that its a temp issue. Although this isn't to be considered conclusive by any means. Just putting it out there in case it helps.

So if I hadn't done 16 hours it would've been fine? I did 16 hours with my 460 and it was fine. still works great

I am sorry guys, 16 hours is nothing that should kill a video card thats well cooled. What are the symptoms or does it not work anymore?

P.S. I have seen the same 1.15v for safety issues, but I don't see 1.18 killing a card that quickly, at least not the GPU core, now maybe the VRMs have damage, in which case I would just RMA it.

P.P.S. There is also different heatsink/cooler on the 570, perhaps the memory/VRMs are not as cooled as well as the 580s, some cheaper cooler to cut costs on it?

Dude... go pump 24V into a 12V DC fan and tell me what happens...

Or better yet, just inhale the smoke when you start passing 14-15V...

You cannot just arbitrarily pump voltage into electronics and expect good things.

16 hours isnt the problem.... people fold on cards all the time....
16 hours at voltage over the max recommended.. yea that might be a problem.

MSI Afterburner locks you at 1.1 for a reason...
